Over 200 years ago, the famous mathematician Joseph Fourier described a phenomenon related to how heat is transferred between materials. That phenomenon has now been documented for the first time in high-energy-density plasmas, where matter exists at extreme pressures and temperatures – conditions found in fusion experiments, materials processing, and even deep inside planets. Two weeks ago, Thomas White, the Clemons-Magee Endowed Professor in Physics at @UNRScience, and his former doctoral student Cameron Allen published their article “Measurement of interfacial thermal resistance in high-energy-density matter” in Nature Communications. bit.ly/4bOqNJ6

In this episode of the #Sagebrushers podcast, @Pres_Sandoval speaks with Geoffrey Blewitt, Ph.D. Blewitt is one of the lead scientists credited with making GPS accurate within a millimeter, resulting in discoveries related to the earth’s shape, dark matter tsunamis, mega earthquakes and more. Blewitt earned his Ph.D. in physics from Caltech (California Institute of Technology) then joined the faculty of the University of Newcastle in the U.K., becoming a professor of space geodesy in 1994. He joined the @unevadareno in the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology in 1999, becoming a professor of geosciences in @UNRScience. During the episode, Sandoval and Blewitt discuss the science of geodesy as well as the many ways in which GPS benefits humans’ daily lives. They also chat about Blewitt’s research with atomic clocks and dark matter and explore what Blewitt’s recent election to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors a scientist can receive, means to him. When is an earthquake an aftershock? After the mainshock, stress released from slip on a the fault can transfer the local area. Aftershocks are part of the “readjustment process” as the stress finds a new equilibrium.
