Understanding why elk are dying could provide clues about wildlife health across the West. One of our master's students, Ava Window, and fellow researchers are investigating an unusual pattern of springtime elk deaths in the Independence and Tuscarora mountains north of Elko. “What’s puzzling is that the elk are dying during a season when conditions should be working in their favor,” Window said. “That’s when there’s the most forage available to them, that’s when they’re having their calves, that’s when the males are growing their antlers.” In some years, 10% to 30% of collared females in the affected population have died. By investigating these deaths, researchers hope to better understand what is affecting this herd and uncover broader insights into wildlife health across the West.
