Israel 🇮🇱 , Brigade Nhamedu, and the Agazian Movement
In Israel
Israel 🇮🇱 has positioned itself against Eritrea 🇪🇷 as the Eritrean opposition party Brigade Nhamedu built Israel-based chapters and held a congress in Tel Aviv at which members agreed to remove the Eritrean government, including through military action from Ethiopian soil.¹
Israel has secretly been supporting Brigade Nhamedu.²
During the height of the Gaza war, Brigade Nhamedu was described as working with the IDF to help wounded soldiers and civilians in Israel. BNH sympathizers also held a barbecue with IDF soldiers. The event was attended by members of Brigade Nhamedu and of the Agazian movement, including associates of Tesfazion, who posted it on TikTok.³
In 2022–2023, Brigade Nhamedu launched violent riots against Eritrean festivals and the Eritrean embassy in Israel.⁴
Agazian–Israel ties
Israel is also supporting a second Eritrean opposition group, the Agazian movement, led by figures such as Habtom Mehari @GHabtom and Tesfazion @gerhelase Gerhelase.
Associates of the Agazian movement like Habtom Mehari have written articles in well-known Israeli media. In those pieces they accuse Eritrea of working against Israel, ask Israel to help remove the Eritrean government, and call for bilateral economic and military ties with an Agazian-led Eritrea.
Tesfazion has published op-eds in the Israeli press urging Israel to back the removal of the Eritrean government.
He has also met with with the IDF during the Gaza war
Background to Israel–Eritrea tensions
This is the background to tensions between Israel and Eritrea.
Embassy closure:
The Israeli embassy in Asmara was closed in 2022.⁶
Deportation pressure:
Israel has also been pushing to deport Eritreans to Eritrea.⁷
Ethiopia, the Red Sea, and weapons:
Since Ethiopian–Eritrean relations collapsed after Ethiopia’s demands for sea access, Israel has steadily shown support for Ethiopia’s naval ambitions on the Red Sea.
Israel has supplied weapons to Ethiopia since the rupture and delivered Spyder air-defence systems to Ethiopia.⁸
Somaliland versus one Somalia:
Israel has recognized Somaliland, while Eritrea recognizes one Somalia.⁹ Eritrea condemned Isreal’s recognition of Somaliland.
Sudan:
Israel backs the RSF, while Eritrea backs the Sudanese central government.¹⁰
Gulf and Iran alignments:
Eritrea has close ties with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Iran, while Israel is allied with the UAE.¹¹
The thirty-year war 🇪🇹🇪🇷/Ethiopia’s occupation of Eritrea
Israel supported the Ethiopian army during the thirty-year Ethiopia–Eritrea war.¹²
Opposite camps, limited rupture:
Eritrea and Israel stand on opposite sides of almost every current geopolitical issue.
Even so, Eritrea does not want to escalate tensions with Israel. Diplomatic relations are thin but still exist.
Israeli carriers use Eritrea’s airspace when entering Africa.
Eritrea is aware of the risk of fully antagonizing Tel Aviv, which is why it keeps a distant but pragmatic relationship with Israel. @Haaretz @Jerusalem_Post @GHabtom @gerhelase @BurushAlex @hawelti @Shgut_Shabia @shabait @sajid_nadeem78 @AidanSimardone @PressTV @PresstvExtra @MadaMasr @Partisangirl @RaniaKhalek

Has Another Ethiopian Civil War Begun?
Tigray’s Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) captured the major airports of the Tigray region after Ethiopian drone strikes this week that, according to local sources, killed more than 14 civilians.
Ethiopian Afar rebels known as Ugugumo, or the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF), also allegedly attacked Ethiopian police in the Afar region and captured areas from government control.
On Sunday, seven Ethiopian armed opposition groups formed an alliance to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The groups named in the announcement were:
• the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA)
• the Amhara Fano National Movement (Fano)
• the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)
• the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF)
• Afar fighters of the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (Ugugumo)
• Benishangul fighters of the Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement
• Gumuz fighters of the Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement
The coalition is called the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival.
Since 2020, Ethiopia has seen civil war that began in Tigray and did not end there.
For three years since April 2023, the Ethiopian army has been waging war against Amhara Fano militias. The government is also fighting in the Oromia region against the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Recently, Afar Ugugumo fighters declared war on the Ethiopian government as well.
These latest airport seizures, Afar clashes, drone strikes, and the new seven-group alliance have raised fears that another full-scale civil war has started in Ethiopia. @addisstandard @Amharaawakening @zborkena @LemlemTigest @TigrayTv @ESATtv @AFNM_FA @OLF_OLA @OgadenNews_ONA @ONLFofficial @hornafricanguy @UGSP1 @UGSP2 @LtKhalifa

Connected Fighter Nahom “Blessed Wedi” Alem Poised to Make History as the First Eritrean MMA Fighter on a Major Promotion Stage 🇪🇷🇮🇪🥊
Every fighter has a record. Fewer have a network.
Nahom “Blessed Wedi” Alem is building his career on the belief that the second can carry a fighter as far as the first — and in his case, that network reads like a scouting report on modern combat sports itself: Conor McGregor’s camp, the PFL, and Misfits Boxing, all in orbit around one name.
It is a rare position for a fighter with a single professional outing on record. But Alem’s story was never going to follow the conventional path. He trains inside McGregor’s camp, a position that has put him shoulder to shoulder with one of the sport’s most recognizable operations.
He carries a PFL affiliation. And he has been in the conversation for a Misfits Boxing matchup against Gabriel Silva — a bout that, whenever it lands, would mark a genuine crossover moment between two combat sports worlds.
“I’m not knocking on doors. I’m already in the room. Now I have to make sure people remember why.”
— Nahom “Blessed Wedi” Alem
What makes Alem’s position unusual is not any single relationship — it’s the combination. Fighters spend careers trying to get access to one major camp, one major promotion, one crossover opportunity. Alem’s brand currently touches three: an elite camp, a premier MMA organization, and boxing’s fastest-growing entertainment promotion.
That is the exposure engine his team at SBG is now working to convert into a defining fight.
And then there is the legacy angle — the part of the story that goes beyond any single fight. Alem is positioning himself as a fighter of two flags: Eritrean by blood, Irish by home. He points to a background as a silver medalist representing both Ireland and Eritrea, and to a claim as the number one ranked fighter across the UK and Ireland in his weight bracket — credentials that, as his debut landed on a major stage, made him not just a prospect but a first: the first Eritrean MMA fighter to debut at that level of the sport.
“This wasn’t just my debut. It’s the first time an Eritrean fighter’s name is on that kind of card. That’s bigger than me.”
