“We found this organ in the female reproductive system, we dont understand it, therefore is is useless”—Experts THE “USELESS ORGAN” MISTAKE How anatomy keeps declaring “we don’t know what it does” — and then writing the body part out of the textbook For more than a century, human anatomy has had a bad habit. A structure is found. It is small, hard to see in a thin slice, or has no obvious job like the heart or the ureter. The researcher cannot name its function. The next sentence is often not “we do not know yet.” It is “therefore it is vestigial.” Therefore leftover. Therefore safe to drop from the diagram. That is not a discovery. It is a guess wearing a lab coat. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. It is evidence that the tools, the questions, or the interest were not good enough. The rete ovarii — the ovarian structure now circulating again after a New York Post story — is only the latest example. The habit is much older. HOW THE GUESS GETS WRITTEN INTO THE BODY The pattern is almost mechanical. If you cannot see it whole, you assume it is leftover. Classic histology cuts organs into thin slices. A coiled tubule looks like scattered islands. Early papers on the rete ovarii could not even agree whether the tubules connected. Some authors thought the extraovarian tip degenerated after birth. That reading made “vestige” feel rigorous. Whole-organ clearing and light-sheet microscopy later showed a continuous three-part structure that persists from fetal life into adulthood. The tissue did not change. The viewing angle did. If people can live without it, you assume it does nothing. You can live without a spleen, an appendix, tonsils, a kidney, or large stretches of liver. Survival after removal is not a function assay. It is a redundancy assay. The body is built with reserve. Expendable in an emergency is not the same as useless in physiology. If the male homologue has a named job, the female version is filed as a failed copy. The rete testis moves fluid and sperm. The rete ovarii was treated as the same embryonic leftover that never found work. That is how a structure conserved across guinea pigs, cows, sheep, pigs, dogs, camels, monkeys, and humans ends up missing from modern diagrams while its male counterpart stays on the page. Conservation across mammals is usually a clue that selection kept something. It was ignored because the function had not been named. If the structure is female and not required for pregnancy, interest collapses. This is not only the rete ovarii. Reviews of genital-evolution papers found a durable male bias: studies of male genitalia far outnumber studies of female genitalia. Medical training long mapped the penis in detail while treating the clitoris as “a small version of the penis,” or leaving its internal bulbs and nerves poorly described. Helen O’Connell’s 1998 cadaver work, and later MRI and nerve-mapping studies, had to rebuild what textbooks had flattened. The logic is the same. If it is not the reproductive pipeline, it can wait. THE USUAL EXHIBITS Robert Wiedersheim’s 1893 list of human “vestigial” structures helped lock the habit into textbooks. Later popular counts ballooned toward 80 or even 180 items. Many of those structures now have documented jobs. The list was treated as a museum of leftovers. It was, in large part, a museum of unfinished research. The appendix is the famous case. Darwin and later textbooks treated it as a shrunken cecum from a more herbivorous ancestor. People can live without it, and appendicitis made it look like a liability. Later work found lymphoid tissue, immune activity, and a plausible “safe house” for gut microbes after diarrheal infections wipe the intestine clean.
