When the label says avocado oil... is it actually avocado oil?! 🥑 😱 In a recent study from UC Davis, researchers tested 54 "made with avocado oil" packaged foods—including chips, mayonnaise, and salad dressings—that listed avocado oil as their only oil. A whopping 89% of those products had fat and sterol profiles inconsistent with authentic avocado oil, suggesting that other fats (like seed oils) may have been present. That's alarming! But, this study isn't proof that every product that failed the test was definitely "cut" with cheaper oil. Avocado oil naturally varies depending on factors like where the avocados are grown, the variety used, and when they were harvested. It's unclear whether the standards used to determine authenticity fully account for that variation. The researchers themselves acknowledge that more work and better safeguards are needed. Still, the bigger issue is hard to ignore. When there's a financial incentive to substitute a cheaper ingredient while keeping the premium claim on the label, there will often be pressure somewhere in the food supply chain to cut corners. And you shouldn't have to be a food scientist to know whether the ingredients you're paying for are actually in the package.
