Big fan of this newsletter from a self-described "demographer and know-it-all" :)
Among married couples in 2021, only 50% are dual-income, according to @uscensusbureau, well below the 56% of 2000. The decline is entirely due to retiring Boomers, yet another example of how the changing age structure is affecting the nation's statistics. demomemo.blogspot.com

Pro tip: The 2020 census apportionment and state population statistics that came out April 26 are not "estimates" or "preliminary" data. They are official census counts. More local counts and demographic details will be released later this year.

Ha... but let's talk the 'real age' of housing stock... and Pittsburgh. I'll bet Boston's housing has had much more reinvestment over the... centuries... than Pittsburgh.
Among the 50 states, Massachusetts has the oldest housing stock, with 32% of housing units built in 1939 or earlier, according to @uscensusbureau's American Community Survey. New York is second (31%), followed by Rhode Island (30%), and Pennsylvania (26%). demomemo.blogspot.com

Per the linked blog post, the numbers are even more horrifying for Black and Hispanic Americans. Just appalling.
What an indictment of our management of this pandemic, and of the structural racism that was present long before Covid.

Life expectancy at birth is projected to drop by 1.13 years in 2020, according to a @PNASNews study. This is a very big deal. In the past 50 years, @NCHStats has measured only 4 annual declines in life expectancy, all small, ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 years. demomemo.blogspot.com

Many Americans feel like they live in smaller, more intimate communities than what is conjured by the terms metropolitan area, principal city, and suburb. This disconnect is revealed in a comparison of @GallupNews findings with gov's metro definitions. demomemo.blogspot.com
