Evil Dead Burns, some thoughts. No spoilers. It’s the Evil Dead film repressed Irish Catholics have been waiting for! Maybe something Eugene O’Neill could’ve done if he had ever delved into the demonic and disgusting. I have to give a lot of credit to the writing, which may be of a higher caliber than the series is accustomed to. It connects to the previous film very nicely, introduces its characterization and character interactions/dynamics, all the necessary exposition while also including some new overall lore in a way that doesn’t feel cheap. It sprints through all of it in a very natural way with each story beat before the major carnage ensues. Hard to pull off but it does. As for the carnage, it delivers what you would expect and hope for, but doesn’t feel like it’s the same old, same old. It has a unique flavor all of its own. Only problem is that Vanicek doesn’t go as hard as Cronin or Alvarez in the gore department. Not that it feels tame by any means, but it doesn’t come close to topping them. I want BLOOD, and lots of it, but that’s just me.
