One of the coolest parts of Halifax for us had to be our trip to Canadian Museum of Immigration at @Pier21 and their ability to search Canadian’s family immigration history, including the passenger lists from when our relatives arrived in Canada!

Yesterday was the 39th anniversary of Edmonton’s Black Friday.
Have you ever seen the monument in Hermitage Park or the one in Evergreen? Below is a photo taken of the community of Fraser and in it is a photo of the home I grew up in, luckily at the time we lived on the other side of Fraser.
I can’t imagine how stressful it would be to have a 2 month old baby in your arms (me) while a nearly F5 tornado goes through your community.

The devastating F4 tornado that tore through Edmonton on July 31, 1987, the day forever known as Black Friday still echoes in the hearts of this city 39 years later..and the recent weather events this summer I’m sure have been a chilling reminder for many.
Twenty-seven lives were lost that afternoon, and the storm remains one of the costliest natural disasters in Canadian history. For so many of us who call Edmonton home, including my own family and friends, the memory has never fully faded.
If you ever find yourself near Hermitage Park, I encourage you to pause at the beautiful monument there. It is a simple, often-overlooked place of remembrance, a space that honours those who were taken and stands as a quiet testament to the resilience of a community that refused to be defined by its grief.
Out of that tragedy also came something lasting and protective: Alberta’s Emergency Alert System. Born from the hard lessons of that day, it continues to help keep people safer when severe weather threatens. In that way, the memory of Black Friday still serves as a reminder that Edmontonians and Albertans look after one another, and that the losses of the past have helped shape a more prepared future.

Not new. Not just downtown.
Restaurants closing in the core again. Headlines feel fresh. The pattern isn’t.
5 years ago we were living it. 10 months of City of Edmonton permitting delays at the Transit Hotel @TransitEdmonton that set us up for failure before the doors even opened. And we were far from alone, plenty of others never made the news, especially outside an election year.
This started as a political announcement. It was never about politics for us. The featured mayor candidate’s opponent (who won) had to address it as well when we went public. Promises followed. Results never did.
Sad. Not surprising.

A tale of two trees.
Drove a big part of my neighbourhood this evening looking for anything #yeg has actually cleared since the storm.
Found one. One tree!
Meanwhile, this one by my old high school, Eastglen looks like it nearly took a house with it. Absolute mess.
I had a 200-lb+ branch hanging over the sidewalk on the boulevard in front of my house for two full weeks after my 311 complaint before they finally moved it last week.
If there was ever a day to bring in outside contractors and stop the bureaucracy, it’s today.
Edmonton #yegcc needs to get its act together. Now.
BREAKING; Calgary’s iconic Cowboys Dance Hall is closing after nearly 30 years.
The venue announced it’s shutting its doors as Penny Lane Entertainment shifts its focus to expanding the Cowboys Music Festival, Cowboys Park, and new events.

Highlands and Bellevue look like a tornado just went though after yesterday’s storm!
This block is far from unusual, every block looked like this coming home from kdays last night!
Hope no one was hurt!! #yeg #yegweather @yegwave
Following several downtown Edmonton business closures, we asked our Instagram followers what keeps them from visiting downtown Edmonton.
Top 3 concerns:
1. Homeless people and open drug use.
2. The parking situation.
3. Expensive prices.

Every Edmontonian should read this...
An entrepreneur's lament for our city.
Let's hope our civic leaders are paying attention to what job creators are saying.
Thanks for saying the quiet part out loud, Chris. It needed to be said. gretabar.com/greta-yeg-is-cl…
