When Karl lost his brother James to an overdose, the police failed to inform him and his family. @TransformDrugs Trustee, Karl Burnett writes for The Observer about how this failure is a symptom of society’s broader indifference to addiction.

New statistics from the ONS released today, yet again, show record levels of drug related deaths - the highest level since records began. How many more of our loved ones must die before policy changes?

Imagine buying a can of beer, & having absolutely no idea how strong it was, if it even was beer, or if it had been adulterated with other unknown, potentially deadly drugs?
*ALL DRUGS* need to be responsibly regulated to minimise risks and enable informed decision making

The findings in our new ketamine briefing are clear:
Increased criminalisation & longer prison sentences wont reduce ketamine use, but will increase harms.
Let’s look at what the evidence actually tells us.....

Is making ketamine Class A, *really* the best Government can come up with in response to the growing challenges around the drug?
*and yes, I made this with AI

“The Govt don't realise that advocacy to #legaliseUKcannabis is now a political asset.
They're too cowardly to develop a strong reform message – even though public support has only grown where it's been implemented”.

🚨 Reflections from the powerful session on “Navigating the Synthetic Drug Challenges” led by Steve Rolles and Dr. Caroline Copeland (UK):
We are entering a new and dangerous era in global drug policy. What we heard today confirms the urgency.
👇 Here are two key takeaways from the discussion:
Tweet 1
A new drug crisis is coming — faster, deadlier, and harder to stop.
Forget heroin. Synthetic opioids like nitazenes are up to 500x more potent than fentanyl, which is itself 50x stronger than heroin.
They’re cheap, easy to make, and impossible to control.
This is a public health timebomb.
Tweet 2
💡 Repression won’t solve the synthetic drug crisis.
Cartels now need just a greeting card’s worth of powder to ship thousands of lethal doses.
We must invest in:
âś… Regulated safer supply
âś… Drug checking & naloxone
âś… Education
âś… Decriminalization
The time to act is now.
