The next chapter of human lunar exploration will unfold near the Moon’s South Pole.
This interactive lets you tour the region where the Moon Base will take shape and explore its distinctive lighting, rugged terrain, and notable landmarks.

Always keep inspiring the next generation.
among the dumbest comments about the flying Roadster is “but how is it practical?”
well in a very practical way it’s inspiring the next generation of engineers who will be building the cars we will all be flying around in one day (my kids have been hard at work all morning)
we need to work towards a future we are excited about
The Chinese AI companies paid Anthropic over half a billion $ to steal their way to their models, likely at least $400M from Alibaba / Qwen alone. And to distill largely from subtly handicapped Claudes as Ant played them. Go Chinese innovation.
"Anthropic told investors on Wednesday distillation accounted for 5 per cent to 7 per cent of revenue"
If true, and Q2 revenue was $11.5B, then that's more than half a billion dollars spent by other labs to distill Anthropic's models!

ALT The start-up has also clamped down on "distillation" - a controversial practice whereby rival Al labs train their models on the outputs of more advanced ones. When rival companies "distil" their models from Anthropic's models, that involves heavy usage and spending. Anthropic told investors on Wednesday distillation accounted for 5 per cent to 7 per cent of revenue and that they had cut it back "materially" in the third quarter of the year, said four people with direct knowledge of the matter.
Among all the awesome views of space, this is one of my favorite NASA Astronaut messages ever.

~“Can economic demand for intelligence saturate? I suspect not.”~
Casey Handmer on why Starlink and Starmind are so valuable:
"If you run the math: What is the revenue per watt of transmitted microwave power for Starlink? It's a billion times higher than space-based solar power.
SpaceX is making money hand over fist with Starlink.
So you take that model and say, we make lots of money transmitting data from your content delivery service like Netflix, but instead let's transmit tokens of some hyper intelligent model.
Once you've got the hardware flying, what is the comparative value between your average Starlink bit versus your average Starmind bit? It's probably at least 1,000 times more valuable. It's not even in the same category.
It will be interesting to see if economic demand for intelligence in the form of AI tokens can saturate. I suspect not."
Strength and security, together as teammates.

Fun!
SpaceX’s Senior Director for Starship Operations / Launch just posted a picture from Christmas Island.
He was on Normand Ranger leading efforts, according to Kiko Dontchev (@TurkeyBeaver) on August 7.
Perhaps Justin is rotating back to Starbase…or running the marathon! 🏃

“Nuclei and Particles: An Introduction to Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics” by Emilio Segrè
Emilio Segrè co discovered technetium (which is the first artificially produced element btw) and was also Enrico Fermi’s first PhD student. This is just a neat book to flip through, even if it is a little outdated.

.@JeffDean & @OriolVinyalsML leaving Google & DeepMind today?! End of an era.
Tomorrow will be my last day at Google after 27 years, and watching it grow from 25 people to 190,000+ has been an amazing journey. Below is a note I shared with many people internally at Google today. An excerpt is:
It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you and to help build some of the most widely used and impactful products of all time. As a kid, I dreamed of helping build software that would be used by many people, and Google now has thirteen products used by more than a billion people (amazing!). Our work has had a tremendous impact in the world, and I have been lucky enough to collaborate and form friendships with many colleagues that I deeply admire, respect, and enjoy. It still brings me joy every time I see people out in the world using our products to find information, handle email, translate documents, watch videos, learn new things, navigate and understand the physical world, browse the web, use their phone, run large-scale computations on our infrastructure, ride in an autonomous vehicle, or perform complex tasks with the help of our AI systems. I hope you all share this sense of joy, because it is a shared accomplishment! Thank you to all of my colleagues at Google over many years!
Now I'm excited to go start @DiscoLoopAI with my longtime friends and colleagues @Sanjay_Ghemawat, @OriolVinyalsML, and @quocleix.
