🌍In the years after the Cold War, it was widely assumed that great powers had moved beyond geopolitics.
Professor Scott Smitson examines why that assumption proved premature in the latest episode of #TalkingStrategy: bit.ly/3Ucdu0C

28/29 In 2001 the American adventure novelist Clive Cussler, who founded a shipwreck-hunting group, announced he had found her remains on the reef. Tree-ring dating of the timbers showed they came from trees still growing in 1894. Not the Mary Celeste.

what if we had a greater risk-taking culture in the public service? try things, collect data, pivot when it doesn't work.
learning from what doesn't work is key to innovation. would love to see us get better at rewarding calculated failures
Robot actuator bodies and other components can require features around different sides of the same part.
4-axis CNC machining uses controlled rotation around one axis to bring those sides into machining position, reducing unnecessary handling for suitable geometries.

An AI that reasons directly with 3D geometry is the real story. We've been bolting vision systems onto that problem in warehouses for years. Wild to watch it finally happen. #Automation

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed TwinX, a reconfigurable robot system made of two wheeled-legged robots connected by a wire.
By winding the wire, the robots can connect and transform into different configurations for walking, sideways driving, and object manipulation.
When separated, they can use the wire to hook or surround objects and transfer forces between the robots.

A shoebill stork from the Berlin Zoo being cared for inside a private home or nurse's bathroom during World War II...
Before the war, the Berlin Zoo was one of the largest in the world. It held around 4,000 birds and mammals from about 1,400 species, plus thousands more creatures in its aquarium.
The war reached the zoo long before the Soviets did. During air raids in November 1943, about 30 percent of the animals were lost in less than 15 minutes. The next day, a direct hit destroyed the aquarium building.
Keepers did whatever they could with what was left. Some animals were moved to other zoos, and others were taken into staff members’ homes and basements to keep them warm, fed and out of harm’s way.
The final battle in the spring of 1945 was the hardest. Artillery fell on the zoo for days, and a massive concrete flak tower next door became one of the last German strongholds in the city.
By the end of May 1945, only 91 of the zoo’s 3,715 animals were still alive.
Among the survivors were Siam, the only one of the zoo’s eight elephants to make it through, and a young hippo named Knautschke.
Knautschke became a symbol of Berlin’s recovery after the war. He lived at the zoo for decades and fathered dozens of calves, helping rebuild the zoo’s hippo family.

This anti-Canadian fool is out there telling people to vote 'no' to question 5 for example, where you aren't required to show ID/proof of CANADIAN citizenship to be able to vote.
Meaning, "Non-Canadian" citizens can vote in Canada.

Tough scene. Nobody running a small shop deserves to come in and find their front smashed in. I hope she can get it cleaned up and reopened.
I work in logistics. Every year we crunch route data the same way. The loan IS the strategy. Development finance creates trade, it doesn't mirror it. You lend ahead of the volume.
Findev CANADA just loaned Golomt Bank (Mongolia) 50 Million USD 😅 Laughing because this is 4.12 times MORE money than Canada-Mongolia annual trade volume. Failing to see the logical strategy of this. OH, and findev also just gave $60 million USD to Muangthai Capital (Thailand)
Trade wars are like the Knicks: everyone's optimistic in the offseason and by April you're just watching Spike Lee wince. #TradeWar #KnicksNation
Fortunately, I'm not sure @SoumayaKeynes and @ChadBown deliver on their title How to Win a Trade War. The book is excellent and while it's more balanced about the pros and cons of trade than I would be, it's hard to come away from it with any enthusiasm for launching a trade war.
Might tune in for this. Always fun watching policy folks catch up to what the trade world figured out a year earlier. Anyone else planning to follow along?
