Governments keep telling us ID checks will make the internet safer. Here is what an ID check actually did for a woman in Pennsylvania.
Cash App demanded Social Security numbers to stop fraud. Hers leaked in a data breach, a scammer opened an account with it, and the police arrested her for his crime. She spent three nights in jail. Cash App now refuses to show her the account because she can’t prove it’s hers, which is exactly what she has been telling them.
Every ID check builds another vault of stolen identities waiting to happen. The more of them we’re forced through, the easier fraud gets, and the people paying for it are the ones who did everything they were told.

I don’t have £2 million in assets, and I don’t earn £200k a year. I’m quite short on both counts. So the HMRC wealth audit doesn’t impact me. Yet.
But it signals a clear intention. A lack of respect for the individual. What is yours is only yours until the government decides they want it to fund further welfare expansion.
Property rights only exist in this country as long as your holdings are meagre enough to escape the fiscal Eye of Sauron. They will come for it all.

HMRC has quietly sent hundreds of letters to wealthy people asking them to reveal what they own. Not what they earn or what tax they've paid, but what they own.
Here's what's going on. A unit called the Wealthy Team covers anyone with "incomes of £200,000 or more, or assets equal to or above £2m in any of the last three years". That's about 850,000 people. The letters ask for a meeting to discuss "sources of wealth", "future intentions", trusts, companies, family arrangements and even "significant life events" you expect in the coming years.
It is presented as voluntary, but there's a nudge: "We may still need to carry out compliance checks on your tax returns. However, speaking with you first may help avoid this."
Until now, inspectors have usually only asked about income and earnings. Experts call this a "sea change". One lawyer asked the obvious question: "does HMRC have a right to know what someone owns and not simply that they have paid the right amount of tax?" A tax adviser said: "No other G20 country asks for this level of detail from its taxpayers about what they own."
So what is it for? Advisers suspect it is groundwork for an exit tax, a charge on your wealth for leaving the country. As one put it: "Building that knowledge could indeed be part of moving towards an exit tax."
You don't have to be a billionaire to see the problem.

Latest budget leak: the taxman will be able to grab cash direct from your bank account.
Healey will announce new powers for HMRC to automatically deduct money from current and savings accounts when they fail to engage with the taxman, reports the Times.
There will be no need for HMRC to get a court order to begin deducting payments.
The Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) attacked the policy.
“We have heard of debts being pursued while claims are still outstanding because of HMRC delays or errors, as well as difficulties contacting HMRC to resolve queries,” said Jon Stride, chair of the ATT’s Technical Steering Group.
This is bound to be a really disastrous policy as HMRC often gets its figures wrong and fails to respond to taxpayers who point this out.

The government scrapped its national digital ID scheme following public opposition but the infrastructure continues to expand.
GOV.UK One Login now has:
- 264 government services already connected
- 500 services expected within two years
- 23 million+ people already using it
The government is also working on ways for different departments to recognise the same individual across their services, rather than requiring people to verify their identity separately.
Officials confirmed this is still being developed, alongside the continued expansion of One Login and GOV.UK Wallet.
The concerns about security, accountability and what happens when these systems get things wrong haven't gone away.
The oral evidence from the 19 October parliamentary hearing is worth reading, particularly questions 12, 42 and 62.
Full transcript:

The government's published roadmap sets out further development, including plans to introduce identity verification using banking information:

The national digital ID scheme may have been scrapped, but digital ID is very much alive and kicking.
DIGITAL ID PLEDGE:
"I don't want there to be a universal log in where the government can just 'switch you off'"
- @DecentraSuze
The national Digital ID proposal was defeated - but the risk of digital control has not gone away
One Login, the GOV UK App and Wallet, digital credentials and identity checks could still grow into Digital ID in all but name
That is why The Pledge still matters
It is a simple but serious commitment to refuse Digital ID - whatever name it is given.

Ofcom have found "no significant change" in children encountering harmful content since the law came into effect last July. This is despite the signifigant threats to free speech and privacy.

This is the future the UK wants for the entire Internet: only a handful of companies, ones that obey British censorship rules, may be permitted to survive.
The Online Safety Act has made hosting community forums so laborious that they're closing shop.
Hundreds of forums have shuttered due to piling paperwork and liability risks.
Ordinary speech from ordinary people, gone.

Debating ex-Tory Minister Sir Michael Ellis on 43,000 Covid care home DEATHS & MIDAZOLAM for @GBNEWS with @MichelleDewbs:
“I am DISGUSTED… out of those that died of Covid, 90% of them died under Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders..when you’re put on one of those placed towards an End of Life Care Pathway.. from 3rd April 2020 until 2021 the..the End of Life Care pathway that the government protocol had adopted was known as NG163… you’re basically given the combination of MIDAZOLAM & and Opioid.. the government’s own website before all of this happened by a month, in March 2020, said that if you place patients on MIDAZOLAM & opioids, to quote, ‘increases the risk of sedation, respiratory depression, coma and DEATH’…the question to you Sir Michael, and you were Attorney General.. did @MattHancock your Health Secretary ignore their own guidelines when using NG163 all the way through this period up until 2021?”

Replying to @Togetherdec
This would personally identify all media accounts. Where there is an employer policy that employees must not post, the effect on free speech is crippling - as they intend. And anyone who believes that such identification would be confidential is dreaming.

The government wants to impose a social media ban to ‘protect children’
We were told this about the Online Safety Act - yet it’s become a censorship tool
Those in power wouldn’t protect kids being raped by gangs & seem to be fine with damaging puberty blockers & worse - mutilation - yet claim we must protect our kids from social media
While saying 16 year olds should get the vote : but not research things before hand online eh?
Our kids are increasingly diagnosed with ADHD & given Ritalin - abdication of adult responsibility of authority to teach and have discipline - to set out what is morally and politically acceptable - and then increasing ADHD is used as an argument to ban social Media
Parents have had too much interference from the state nudging imposing and must have autonomy in the private sphere away from the ever expanding ideological state
Medicalising life and particularly therapeutic impositions on children by adults by authorities determined to imposed digital id verification must be called out for what it is
