Migration through the #dariengap is becoming more global by the day, with tens of thousands of people crossing the jungle in 2024, from over 100 countries. This creates challenges. Especially for humanitarian groups who have been slow to adapt to things like language barriers
The internationalisation of migrants crossing the Darién Gap is putting pressure on aid groups to adapt to their specific needs. Because of the language barrier they are often at even greater risk than Latin American migrants. buff.ly/4aLXbKb

Salazar found in her research that the best thing for children’s mental health in this context is simply to allow them to be children. “Children need to play. They need to have toys. They need to kick a ball around.” Latest by me for @NACLA nacla.org/life-beyond-darien…

Tomorrow's front page of @ScotNational. We publish a timeline of a year of Israel's bombardment of Gaza. It's all here in black and white - the war crimes, murdered journalists, flattened hospitals, orphaned children. 7567 words, 42,000 deaths. Don't look away.

Thrilled to have this @RefugeesIntl report with @r_schmidtke out where we trace the humanitarian needs and responses of migrants passing through both Panama and Costa Rica
Humanitarian needs along the Darien will remain high for the foreseeable future as migration through the gap continues. In our latest report, @r_schmidtke describes how Panama + Costa Rica can meet these needs and ensure that migrants’ rights are upheld. refugeesinternational.org/re…

You should read the bible verses on migration: Ezekial 4:22 "Sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you. shall be to you as native-born children of Israel. With you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.”
I don't talk about my faith a lot, but Matthew 25:40 says: "To the least among you, you do of me." That's what the bipartisan border bill does. It's supported by law enforcement and lets us keep our dignity about how we treat people.

1/ For the Atlantic's September cover story, I took 3 trips to the Darien Gap to try to understand the forces driving people there: instability, policy failures, and smuggling orgs that are eager to take advantage. @lynseyaddario captured it all. theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…
