Let's talk a little more about Margaret Hamilton because she deserves it In 1961, Margaret Hamilton was tackling massive systems, having previously wrangled room-sized computers that blared like a foghorn whenever they crashed. Her fix wasn’t just to patch the bug. Everytime there was a crash, she took a Polaroid of the programmer who wrote it, and a note on the mistake. That way, if it ever happened again, they wouldn't be starting from scratch. They could note patterns and the last person who triaged that failure could help. This is a critical aspect of what she gave us. She didn’t stop at fixing errors. She studied their patterns so she could see them coming. She called them “the enemy,” and she meant it. Initially, when she was working on failure modes, higher-ups were errors wouldn't happen she actually named her program “Forget It.” But failures did happen. And her mindset, and discipline sent men to the Moon. Her Apollo software was built to expect the unexpected, and on Apollo 11 it recognized an overload mid-landing and kept the critical tasks running. Every postmortem, every bug tracker, every “let’s make sure this never happens again” carries a little of her in it. Thank you, and rest in peace, Margaret Hamilton 🚀

Thanks, I think I hate it. Generally a fan of Cloudflare, but also a fan of Deno. What comes next might be great and for that I'm hopeful, but Deno's independence and the runtime itself was valuable. Sad to see Deno discontinued.

Reading the comments of junior mathematicians confirms what many senior mathematicians have been warning about over the past month: It is becoming clear that people with the intellectual ability to understand these proofs will not be interested in spending their lives training to check LLM logs. This is the tragic side of what is happening that almost no one — except the actual mathematicians — seems to get. Either we figure out how to keep people interested in doing mathematics, or in 20 years LLMs will have no one’s work left to recombine into new proofs, and no one interested in reading those proofs. That would be the thermal death of mathematics. The argument that “LLMs will read LLM math” is so shortsighted that it makes me want to cry…

BREAKING: OpenAI might have stolen another major proof. In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAI may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and Gábor Kun were working on Gromov’s soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAI later announced Astra had solved. I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem. If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself. And if the allegations raised by Levent Alpöge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents. We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science. AI is not discovering new mathematics. AI is stealing human discovery.

You might find this interesting - We created the first WebMCP benchmark, comparing it with computer use and DOM-based methods across speed, cost, task success rate, and token usage. The results are incredible. webmcp.com/benchmark You’re getting 3-5x speed, and an order of magnitude cost improvement (up to 23x lower costs) while being 10-15% better at solving tasks compared to other methods

Q: Which would use fewer credits: two prompts with Opus or ten prompts with Sonnet? A: In general, the first 1-2 prompts consume less tokens. Make sure your first prompt is concise and specific.
