On this day, we attended to the arc of the moral universe. Thank you @MSCAssoc for putting on an extraordinary event honoring the legacy of Dr. King through the stories of our #SickleCell warriors.
I check back in to confirm that this app is a dumpster fire feeding Elon’s data monster. Please dear #SickleCell community—join Blue sky! Med Twitter is making the migration!
Can’t be there this year

My #SickleCell patient this morning tearfully begged me, “Please please don’t let Trump deport me. If I go back home, I’ll die.” This is going to be what the next four years are like. But our Center will use every resource we have to fight for our #Warriors
Let’s add our #Warriors caregivers, providers, advocates, and leaders as we grow the #SickleCell community across the sky bridge. go.bsky.app/Gf3JzR
Dear #medtwitter and #SickleCell community, are we making the jump to bluer skies?
Elon’s data and power grab tomorrow is terrifying. We won’t cede this ground but come find me @TheSickleDoc.bsky.social
“Thank you for your cooperation” has been a term of oppression throughout history. Let me be clear to those who need to hear it within the powers that be: I am not cooperating. I am acquiescing to a mandate over which I have no control, preserving for the next fight tomorrow #SCD
Public service announcement to those that need to hear it: our #SickleCell patients will not be moved around like pieces on a chess board. The resources for our #Warriors are not expendable. The best time to come for them is never. And it sure as hell isn’t this week.
Today we need to mourn so that tomorrow we can go back to do the work. It becomes even more dangerous tomorrow. It becomes even more risky tomorrow. But it also becomes even more necessary tomorrow. We mourn today so tomorrow we can take up our shovels and tend the land ourselves
It’s #ElectionDay and the single most important act of advocacy any of us can take is to #Vote For the sake of my family, for the sake of our #Warriors and for the sake of our future, I’ve voted for #KamalaHarris and #TimWalz Real change is in our hands.

A great day for the National Academy and a great day for medicine. @Jbetancourtpr deserves all of this and more for his contributions to the health and well being of the community.
Twenty five years ago, while just starting my career, I was asked to serve on an IOM Committee tasked to study health disparities. This experience transformed my career. Now I’ve been inducted into the NAM. Honor of my life, and so thankful for the sacrifices and support of my family, friends, mentors, and all my partners and team members over the years that made this possible. This is dedicated to them, and I promise there is lots more to come. @MGHDisparities @MGHEquity @commonwealthfnd
One of our #SickleCell #warriors had been deported to Rwanda where his disease exploded with severe consequences. Deep gratitude to @RepStephenLynch and his office for helping us bring him back to the US for treatment. Advocacy and political partnership in medicine is essential.

I gotta hand it to my medical team at MGH. While I was not in a good place this was the first time I've had doctors and nurses fully locked in on my specific needs being a SCD patient. I didn't feel ashamed for asking for stronger painkillers, or having to explain 20-(1/2)
This would make a dramatic impact, @Delta Help make flying less frightening for our #SickleCell #warriors
Flying Delta home from a meeting on #SickleCell & #thalassemia. @Delta We LOVE the 🩷 for breast cancer but can we please turn September RED for #SickleCellAwarenessMonth?@PayalDesaiMD @seethal_jacobmd @TheSickleDoc @dukesickle @thecuresci @ConquerSCD @sickledocmom @SCDAAorg?
Thank you to @EricBoodman and @LydiaPecker for casting light on this great shame. Yet another example of the intrinsic racism without our health care system.
A new analysis found that Americans with sickle cell disease have a significantly higher rate of postpartum sterilization than those without:
-8.8% vs. 6.7% across the US
-13.7% vs. 8.1% in AL, MS, KY, and TN
That raises important questions:

Now that #SickleCell awareness month is ending, it’s time to move on to #SickleCell action month and #SickleCell innovation month and #SickleCell equity month until our health care system is as invested every day of every month as they are in every other disease.
