In 1983, Penn State began developing a new visual identity for its Intercollegiate Athletic Department. The university wanted a single graphic image that could be applied consistently throughout its communications and network of 65,000 students across 22 campuses. A licensing committee also identified an opportunity to generate royalties through a distinctive, protected logo.
Roy Parcels of Dixon & Parcels Associates was brought on to the project. At a meeting with football coach Joe Paterno and athletic administrators, the discussion turned to what this lion should look like. Paterno’s preference was clear: “I just don’t like those ones with big teeth and big claws.” A further survey of the university’s coaches reinforced this emphasis on ‘class’ and ‘dignity’.
Distinctiveness presented its own challenge. Dixon & Parcels’ research into American collegiate identities found that more than 125 schools used a member of the cat family. Penn State’s lion would need to stand apart while expressing the university’s heritage.
Parcels developed around 15 initial designs, with the final design drawing reference close to home: the Nittany Lion statue on the University Park campus, sculpted by Heinz Warneke. A lion was also the mascot for the athletic teams of Pennsylvania State University. The statue informed the design of the stylised lion’s head, which was then enclosed within an oval becoming a distinctive graphic form that could be protected for commercial use.
Its simplified contours conveyed strength and dignity, while allowing reproduction in one colour, across different media and at both large and small sizes.

if you want an idea of how much Beaver Stadium has changed during the past two years of renovations, these two photos from @GracexBrennan — vs. Illinois in the September 2024 White Out "Energy" game, vs. USC last night — do a great job of illustrating just that.

Last thing I’ll say about this past week at Penn State; much has been made about empty seats….is there a chance we just forgot how much bigger this new West Side is than before? It’s quite the difference. You put 100,000 people in a bigger venue, it’s going to look less full.

I am a Mountain. It's literally in my name.
Is Mount Nittany a mountain or a hill?

Since June, Penn State has posted just three times on Roar+. It has not posted on the platform once during the 2026 school year.
Yet it was still charging fans $15 a month for access while also dropping its paywall to new subscribers.

If you ever wonder why the Penn State beat is still asking Matt Campbell & players “hey how are you?” instead of just starting a question.
There’s been some conditioning… 😂

Penn State added a brand new upper bowl to Beaver Stadium, so I went to the highest possible seat in the building and the view is SPECTACULAR. Look at this.

“Well yeah! It’s Marshall! Penn State should win by that much.”
I watched them go down to the wire with Bowling Green two years ago and seriously struggle with Nevada and FIU last year.
This game was absolutely different.
