Great words from our very own @DavidJenningsRP on Hewick:
🗣️ "There was always some sort of hysteria when Hewick ran – Shark always made sure of that – but so what? Bullishness is so much more entertaining than boringness. So what if he thought he would never be beaten, so what if he aimed for the stars and so what if he never knew his limitations. This was one story that never had a script.
How fitting that Hewick’s career came to an end in the humble surroundings of a conditions hurdle at Cork in the middle of summer, just as humble as the way it started and had stayed for so long.
From Galway Plates to King Georges, to trips to the States, to exploiting opportunities over hurdles, to being bang there turning for home in a Cheltenham Gold Cup, it has been one hell of a ride and, unfortunately, the sort of ride that won't be replicated any time soon. The big are getting bigger and the small are being wiped out so Hewick was one of those glorious anomalies that might never come along again. It was jump racing as we used to know it. When everyone had a chance, no matter who they were.
Thanks for the memories, Hewick. It’s been a blast."
🗣️ "In a world Willie Mullins is taking over, Hewick was a glorious rick that might never be recreated"

Those closest to Envoi Allen pay tribute to their superstar horse
Darragh O'Keeffe, jockey: "Everything was grand and I was happy out there. He pulled up A1 and everything like that, but when we were trotting back [after the race] he collapsed. He was unbelievable and a special horse. He won numerous races and it just happened so fast."
Richard Thompson, Cheveley Park Stud: "We didn't see it but the vets okayed them all after the race and Darragh said he was pricking his ears after the race. He then went over as he was coming back onto the chute. He'd just retired but then in a minute or two he was gone.
"He was such a lovely little horse and it wasn't the ending we wanted. He's been an incredible servant and just wonderful over the years. It's such a sad way to go."

In a parallel universe Cheltenham watered heavily for yesterday and the connections of Fact To File are bemoaning the fact that, having supplemented him for the Gold Cup at huge expense, he is being forced to attempt the trip for the first time in a wholly unnecessary bog.
Home By The Lee a deserving winner. Great to see these horses coming back year after year and eventually getting rewarded.
Also a form boost for Staffordshire Knot in the Pertemps, beaten half a length by Home By The Lee in the Galmoy last time (in receipt of 8lb).
A win for Carry On Heidi in the 13:00 at Limerick would be interesting with an eye to the first at Cheltenham - she was 9 lengths 3rd to Oldschool Outlaw (and Place De La Nation) at Fairyhouse last time. Tough ask at 22/1 but potentially informative nevertheless.
Lots of talk about Townend's selectivity in handicaps this week, but it's not at all unusual for him. Only took one handicap ride in 2023 and 2024, and is similarly selective (but not to the same extent) at other spring festivals. Handicap rides per festival for the last 5 years:

Happy Cheltenham week to all who celebrate. Last shout for this interview with professional punter Johnny Dineen.
“It’s a game that wouldn’t suit many people. Thankfully, my kids won’t follow in my footsteps – I’d hate for them to be involved in it."

In a not insignificant change to the modern Cheltenham Festival norm, races over hurdles will have a noticeably longer run-in, with the final flight on both courses moved to in between the final two fences, having been located after the final fence in recent years.

It was difficult to find words on a morning none of us ever wanted to face, but felt a privilege to be given the chance to pay tribute to Michael O'Sullivan on today's @LuckOnSunday.
A stand-up guy whose company was a pleasure to be in. Thinking of everyone close to him today 🙏⭐️
