When McMillan Memorial Library closed for restoration in June, we began with urgent roof & drainage repairs to protect the lib from further water damage.
Phase 1 now nearing completion, we’re preparing for the next: transforming the Children’s Section.
1/2
Thanks to supporters on M-Changa, alongside contributions from institutional partners, we’ve raised approximately 57% of our KES 25 million target for the Children’s Section!
Now, we need your help to get to 100%.
Every contribution counts.

Honored to be named to this year’s #TIME100Next.
The world doesn’t always expect world-class organizations to be built in Africa, especially in school feeding. We’re changing that.
Proud of @Food4Education. And thank you, Trevor Noah, for seeing us. ❤️
A look back at the WRI Ross Center #PrizeforCities awards ceremony, where we were recognised as a Cycle 5 finalist for our work restoring Nairobi’s public libraries.
It was an honour to share our work alongside projects transforming cities around the world.

Earlier this year, the Eastlands Lib community expressed an interest in learning KSL. And we made room for it as part of programming at #NBOLibraries
Over 3 months, 46 participants that showed up to learn and eventually marking the end of the programme with a graduation.
As we mark International Week of Deaf People, we’re reminded accessibility in public libraries goes beyond spaces we build.
Congratulations to everyone who completed the classes and thanks to @ACarnegieFdn, @theworldorg for making possible, and to Handlanguage Kenya for guiding.
In 2012, @ShiroKoinange and @SisterKilljoy walked into McMillan Memorial Library and found Nairobi’s oldest library in a state of disrepair.
In 2017, Book Bunk was founded, and began working to restore the city’s historic public libraries into vibrant, inclusive spaces.

I recently had the privilege of stepping inside Nairobi’s oldest public library, the iconic McMillan Memorial Library, for a special CTA Brand Experience.
Beyond its remarkable architecture lies a rich history and an exciting story of restoration, preservation and renewal. We explored the library’s past, witnessed the transformation currently underway and discovered the vision to restore this treasured landmark as a vibrant centre of knowledge, culture and community.
This memorable experience was made possible courtesy of @TheBookBunk, whose work continues to preserve and reimagine Nairobi’s public libraries for generations to come.

For 95 years, McMillan Memorial Library has stood at the heart of Nairobi.
But its history has not always been one of inclusion. When it opened in 1931, African were excluded. In 1958,McMillan opened its doors to all.
Today, we’re restoring the lib for the generations to come

Phase 1 is underway to protect the building from further water damage. Once the building is watertight, the Children’s Section comes next.
We want to create a safe space where Nairobi’s children can read, learn, create and discover.

Earlier this year, we celebrated World Book Day with young readers at Eastlands Library, in partnership with @TheBookBunk Bunk, for a book distribution and children's reading session featuring Bluey - one of 🇦🇺's most recognised cultural exports.

When restoration works began at McMillan Memorial Library in June, the team encountered an unexpected challenge on the roof. Pigeons had made the roof their home, and decades of accumulated bird waste had built up across the surface.
Heritage conservation students training built a temporary house to accommodate them while the roof was cleared.
The clean-up yielded approximately 1,900 kg of bird waste. After being tested, it was donated to a farm and used in the gardens at Eastlands and Kaloleni libraries
With the roof and drainage underway, the Children’s Section is next. Help us make it safe for the next generation. Donate via M-Changa : mchanga.africa/fundraiser/12…
