We thought we'd have forever.
Marching #parallel into the future, all #bright eyes and whiskey saunter.
But life gets busy, you know?
And time
runs
out.
Look for me in the garden, where goodbyes grow.
I'll be waiting.
Forever.

Happy #OpenAccessWeek, folks! Just a reminder: some problems are too big for one person (or institution, or nation) to tackle alone. Also, two heads are better than one, information wants to be free, and sharing is caring. True story.

Happy #WorldFoodDay! As a child, Patrick Rakau helped his grandmother care for pigs, chickens and goats. Now, as a researcher at the @ARCSouthAfrica Animal Production Institute, he’s turned feeding farm animals into a science.

Weeping willows do not sway
A #winsome_howling plays
A monody of loves tragic end
Calling for his longlost girlfriend
Though pulse be gone flesh be cold
A spectral flame takes hold
The bleeding fog washes all in red
To mourn the love—that was not #dead

Beneath the ash
For years,
I kept a house
with all its windows shut.
The curtains hung
like forgotten skin.
Dust gathered
in the hollows of chairs,
along the spines of books,
over all we left
unspoken.
The clocks had stopped.
No one thought
to remove them.
In the hallway,
my name hung crooked
on the door,
faded by weather
that had never entered.
Once,
there had been laughter here.
Music spilling
from the kitchen,
bare feet on wooden floors,
the careless opening
of doors.
Then fire passed
through the rooms
without leaving flames.
It took the colour
from the walls,
the warmth from the bed,
the small things
that made a house
a home.
I called the house empty.
I called the garden dead.
I called the silence
peace.
Its rooms grew still
beneath the dust,
its garden lost
to winter and neglect.
Until one night,
beneath the floorboards,
I heard it—
water,
moving through the dark.
And somewhere,
beneath the ash,
a last ember
held its breath.
Beneath the ash,
beneath the frost,
the dark began
to loosen its hold.
And slowly,
the silence changed.
Not all at once.
Not without its ghosts.
But somewhere
beneath the ruin,
something stirred.
What I had called dead
was not yet done
with living.
And I,
who had mourned
the last of myself,
began to wonder
what else
had survived the fire.

Fall has a sound
the heart can't understand
Words draped in black ink
seeped into blank pages
filled with monotone sighs
I dreamt of a leaf
burning with tinted hues
floating on water
Letting go too soon
in the sunshine of autumn
Goodbye has a sound
That's only heard once
Bleeding into an October
of fading colors

One thing about us South Africans - we have our problems (boy, do we have our problems), but we know our injustices when we see them. And some of us even try to do something about them... Congrats, Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay - good stuff!

SANParks Welcomes Guilty Verdict In A Decade-Long Rhino Poaching Case
South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomes the guilty verdict against former Kruger National Park Regional Ranger, Rodney Landela, and former State Veterinary Service Animal Health Technician, Kenneth Mochocho, who were found guilty of the illegal hunting and killing of a white rhino in a protected area, as well as possession of a firearm with the intent to commit a crime.
The judgement brings closure to a matter that has been before the courts for approximately ten years and represents a significant victory in the fight against wildlife crime and the protection of South Africa’s natural heritage: shorturl.at/koMDm
