Many companies demand phone conversations for certain matters (e.g., unsubscribing, price inquiries, billing issues). It's inconvenient, of course, but it's also plainly illegal under accessibility laws in most countries. Surprisingly, it remains extremely common at large companies that are otherwise scrupulous about compliance.
