This year is the 25th anniversary of my report establishing the concept of community cohesion to tackle ‘parallel lives’, the stereotypes and fear of the ‘other’. Some good work over the years, but still no sign of the long term capacity needed for learning to live together

This is very worrying, the @NatSecSoc concerns are legitimate and a more robust approach to religious charities must now be taken

If Musk is responsible for weakening Ukraine's defenses at this critical time, his businesses need to be excluded from any critical infrastructure in Europe. Not as a sanction, but as self-protection.

This is a great move towards ending social media groupthink. But it needs to be the default position and algorithms should only be activated by the user, not pushed by the social networks bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwr7…

Sadly the case for many towns and cities, local newspapers (and radio) are disappearing and local news is only via unchecked social media. We need a new financial regime to give responsible local journalism a chance and protect democratic principles

Panel discussion about Free Speech with @Moreincommon_ and L.iberty. As an issue Free Speech is now much higher on our social agenda generally. However, do we have the civic capacity and infrastructure to support citizens express themselves lawfully? @Jonathan_Hinder

This is where the attack on democracy has to stop - all other journalists must now support their colleagues and refuse to attend the White House until the ban is lifted bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6e3…

Charity rules need to change - and debar all religious organisations unless they are able to demonstrate that ‘public benefit’ means all of the public, rather than partial or sectarian interests
The rise of Christian nationalism has only highlighted the kind of harmful dogma being promoted under the guise of religion in our charity sector - and effectively state-subsidised. Our engagement officer @fodhlabrady discusses for @TimesRadio👇 youtube.com/watch?v=xA5yUrSc…

Although there are some differences in views, the opinions of White and minority respondents are remarkably similar, a foundation on which to build?
It finds that people of all backgrounds agree progress has stalled on racial equality and may even be going backwards. Nearly half of white respondents (48%) and ethnic minority respondents (44%) feel racial equality is getting worse rather than better.

Hopefully temperatures can be brought back down, but not likely if it depends a new found ‘aggressive’ approach. Time to consider the untested but now essential geo-engineering technology. There is now no real alternative
UNEP published Limiting Overshoot, its first report on the likelihood and consequences of exceeding 1.5°C of global warming. It finds that global temperature rise is set to cross 1.5°C, likely within the next few years, pushing climate risks to increasingly dangerous levels. The report also finds that temperatures can still be brought back down in line with the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement. Doing so will require aggressive emissions cuts, a major scale-up of responsible carbon removal — ultimately moving beyond net zero to net-negative emissions — and urgent action on adaptation and resilience to address climate impacts. This alone justifies the switch from fossil fuels to renewables.
Accelerating clean energy and ending waste burning will lead to healthier lives, cleaner skies, more prosperous economies, and a safer climate for billions.   September 7 is #CleanAirDay: cleanairblueskies.org/about/…

Great questions and pressure from @Jas_Sanghera_ though I suspect the Forced Marriage Unit is held back by Ministers who are unwilling to confront this abuse from within communities
Who holds the Government Forced Marriage Unit to account? It is time for independent scrutiny, questions need to be asked about what happens to those referred? Why so few prosecutions? Why are schools not mandated to act? So many questions, so few answers.

Why are we for or against data centres? A solution would require them to offset their impact with renewable energy and water supply and storage (already required to find 10% biodiversity net gain in UK). Water offset requires massive investment but have to face up to the problem they are creating.

The last point made by Katy Balls applies in all cases where political trust has been lost: ‘winning back tough territories means meeting voters on their own grounds’.

This is a good point. And the UK will also lost its position of influence -,we can hardly implore others to take action if we are seen to abandon net zero
On the argument that it's futile for Britain to do anything about climate change.

Important reminder by @RHarrabin of the potentially catastrophic risks faced by this region as we continue to ignore the threat of climate change.
The Dam tragedy makes news today, but when this dire story fades, people living downstream from shrinking glaciers will face a loss of summer melt water vital for irrigating their crops. And remember, governments have knowingly built hydro dams in places at quake risk.

It is hard to believe that there is any debate about this. A serious safeguarding risk must result in immediate action
In the wake of the Charity Commission revealing it has "intelligence" of charities operating illegal unregistered schools, we're calling for the closure of any charities which break the law and undermine the safety, welfare and education of children. civilsociety.co.uk/news/char…
