So absolutely thrilled to see my first paper out in J Neuro today! Here, my Honours work, with beautiful RNAscope from @Ongbaba96’s Masters, investigated gating mechanisms of somatostatin interneurons in the NTS protect-au.mimecast.com/s/i0… @SfNtweets @TheFlorey @UniMelbMDHS

Leaving academia is not leaving research. Leaving academia is not leaving science. Leaving academia is not failing. Not sure who needs to hear this today, but please believe it.

FYI: 12+ months later, a little bit of life flipping upside down, a few extra months in lockdown, an ADHD diagnosis, lowkey leaving academia, I’m finally on the home stretch #KimSubmitYourGoddamnThesisPls

Ever wanted to know what it’s like getting a tech job before submitting a wet lab PhD? Opening your two year old R scripts to see if they’re worth putting in as an appendix, and wondering if re-writing them in Pyspark would actually be faster than working out your baby code 🥺

It’s pretty crazy that I’m already coming up to 6 months at @camplexer! What a nice milestone to be invited “back” to speak to @TheFlorey students about careers post research degrees (maybe I’ll even submit my thesis soon, too 😬)

I used my network! (Thank youuu @guhou)! The biggest switch for me was learning how to write an industry CV, which is extremely different to an academic CV. You *do* have relevant skills, there’s just a different way of selling them

Rather than “I’m an electrophysiologist, these are the conferences I‘ve presented at”, it was “I’m a data analyst and neuroscientist, I benefited my institute by winning $x in conference awards”. Spell out your achievements in their language

So in a plot twist, I’m leaving Patchland for new pastures. Who would have thought a PhD in neuroscience would lead to customer data wrangling. Not me, but I am definitely excited for the new adventure! See you soon, @camplexer!

Hi as someone who technically earns below minimum wage completing a PhD, and doesn’t own a car, I don’t need your judgement for being “reckless”. I just want stable accomodation. Is that so much to ask for?
Young people are more likely to get COVID? Yes Because they are all reckless and out partying? No Because they are far more likely to - have public facing jobs - use public transit - live in shared flats Pls stop making this a pseudo intergenerational war 😷

Excited that our lab's development of a novel inhibitory #chemogenetics approach is just out in @CellReports cell.com/cell-reports/fullte…! Major collaboration between the @BathgateRoss and McDougall labs @TheFlorey and Allen lab @UniMelbMDHS. 🧵 on this novel research #scicomm

And finally, the approach is validated in vagal sensory neurons where this circuit-based chemogenetics caused inhibition of baroreceptor regulation of blood pressure and decreased body weight and opens further understanding of how obesity might be treated. (4/4)
