CEOs love the idea of AI because someone sells it to them as a solution that both cuts costs (in this case, gross employee costs) and *sounds* innovative enough to impress shareholders (and get gently positive media coverage).

The real story here is how easily bewitched CEOs are about the capabilities of AI to replace workers. And, as with most "AI" technology, implementation involves a massive amount of supposedly algorithmic tasks outsourced to low-wage and precarious labour in the developing world.

Fantastic piece by @hamiltonnolan that applies beyond a US context — we’d add that unions in tech can have a special part to play in shaping the AI agenda around the world hamiltonnolan.com/p/ai-union…

There’s nothing inevitable about “the way we work” — a more sustainable and equitable future depends on improved worker power, not technological innovation

At @UTAW_uk we're already seeing how AI tools can be used to track, exploit, and discriminate against workers. This is a backwards and ignorant decision - new legislation is desperately needed if we're to keep pace with the deployment of AI technology in the workplace.
NEW 🚨 | Today this government has RULED OUT a new AI Regulator. That's bad news. THREAD 🧵

An important thread — unions do more than protect jobs, they defend work that capitalists deem unnecessary. As this disaster shows, that can have huge (and long-lasting) ecological implications
On February 3, a horrifying railroad accident took place. A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. You might've seen images of the flames, but you probably haven't heard that unions were trying to prevent this exact accident. 🧵
