SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER - SAY NO TO @wayve_ai -
JOIN OUR JOINT PROTEST AGAINST @Uber's DRIVERLESS CARS
230-238 York Way, London N7
Saturday 17 October
11am - 1pm
The jobs and livelihoods of over 100,000 PHV drivers in London alone are under threat from robotaxis - with no #JustTransition Plan in place, and no #transparency on near-misses or accidents during the pilot phase.
And this isn't just about drivers.
#Robotaxis are the frontline of a much bigger shift. #Automation and #AI threaten jobs and incomes across the economy. If we don't challenge this now, every worker will eventually face the same questions about replacement, accountability and livelihoods.
Join us for the UK's first protest against Uber’s driverless taxis. Stand up for jobs and incomes. Because today it’s drivers who are affected, but tomorrow, it could be your job on the line.
Our day of protest against @Uber @wayve_ai outside their London offices is underway! Lots of drivers and press here, and we're feeling the love from passing drivers #nobodywantsthis @TfL @GFTU1 @BrentGreens @MayorofLondon @SadiqKhan. We're here till 1pm - come along and join us!
Come and join us tomorrow, 11-1 pm, at @Uber @wayve_ai offices in London, to protest against #robotaxis. Because #technology should empower #workers, not replace them. Come and talk to drivers about how #driverlesscars are threatening their earnings, #jobs and livelihoods. Because today it's app drivers and couriers, but tomorrow, it could be your job replaced by #AI. #solidarity #standtogether #workersrights #workersrightsarehumanrights

Today @ADCU becomes the first UK union to call for a lifetime basic income for PHV drivers - funded by #bigtech - to compensate for job losses as a result of automation, and an immediate freeze on the issuing of PHV licences by @transportforlondon.
“The same app companies that are generating vast profits and doing everything in their power to minimise their tax liabilities in the UK have more than enough money to compensate the drivers they are looking to replace.”

Today @biztradegovuk has published proposals for worker status reforms and is seeking views on changes to prevent businesses incorrectly classifying workers as self-employed so they can avoid their legal obligations as employers.
The government estimates that around 900,000 people are trapped in bogus self-employment. We suspect that is an underestimate.
Back in September, the Secretary of State @jreynoldsMP declared bogus self-employment "unacceptable" and confirmed the government would "not hesitate to take action” where employment law was breached and that worker rights were enforceable "regardless of the business model" an employer uses. Where workers were being denied core rights including National Minimum Wage and paid annual leave, he added that "@HMRC and the Fair Work Agency will not hesitate to take action where breaches occur."
ADCU welcomes the publication of these proposals and will be now digesting them in full, and responding on behalf of our members.
We know that @Uber and other operators are in daily breach of the 2021 Supreme Court judgment which classified drivers as workers, and are still continuing to deny drivers worker status, minimum wage, and paid leave.
This will only stop if these proposals have real teeth, and are accompanied by real commitment, action, and enforcement, on the part of the government, and regulators. Something that we have not seen, at all, in the past 5 years.
phtm.co.uk/news/9317/phtm-ne… Regulation of #robotaxis must be devolved to @TfL and away from @transportgovuk.
Today @LondonAssembly Transport Committee published its report on autonomous vehicles - london.gov.uk/who-we-are/wha… - and we're pleased to see so many of ADCU's key concerns have been recognised, and our concerns listened to.
The report is pushing for licensing powers over autonomous vehicles to be handed back from @transportgovuk to @TfL - and a fair transition for drivers, including retraining, redeployment and funding support.
With more than 100,000 private hire drivers working in London, their futures cannot be treated as an afterthought.
We now expect the Government @jreynoldsMP to act on these recommendations and ensure drivers and their unions are involved at every stage of the consultation process.

#NYC is leading the way on reining in the unlawful activities of the big app companies - if you commit wage violations against workers, the authorities will catch up with you. Following a city investigation, @DoorDash in NYC has agreed with New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to pay $131.5m for underpayments of wages, and late payments, to thousands of drivers, affecting 264,000 workers.
Most of this relates to failure to pay for 'idle time' - the time spent between orders - a huge issue for app drivers and couriers in the UK too.
So today, @adcu shouts out to @TfL @transportgovuk and @andyburnham to #bemorenewyork, who are showing us how it should be done.
And we shout especially loudly to @jreynoldsMP @biztradegovuk who wrote to us recently stating that that workers' rights are enforceable "regardless of the business model" an employer uses, and that where individuals are denied their core rights to the National Minimum Wage, that "HMRC and the Fair Work Agency will not hesitate to take action where breaches occur."
Let's see that action now.@Uber @UberEats @Deliveroo.
"Bogus self-employment is unacceptable. Employers should never seek to deny people their employment rights and avoid their own obligations by claiming someone is self-employed when in reality they are not." And in relation to workers being denied core employment rights, "these rights are enforceable, and @HMRC and the Fair Work Agency will not hestitate to take action where breaches occur." These are the words of the Business Secretary @jreynoldsMP @biztradegovuk in his response to our letter calling for action against app companies that break the law. If that's true, why is @Uber still denying drivers rights won in the Supreme Court? We've heard the words. Now we want enforcement. No offence -but how is there time in this parliament for *THREE* votes on assisted dying but not yet enough time to legislate employment status for millions trapped in bogus gig self employment?
MPs vote against fresh attempt to legalise assisted dying -

ADCU advice to Londoners: don't set foot in a driverless taxi until status of "human safety drivers" clarified.
Driverless taxis for hire hit London's streets for the first time today. But who are the “human safety drivers” who will be sitting in the cars during this initial rollout? How were they recruited? Are they licensed private hire drivers? And if so, where does liability sit if there is an accident or a passenger becomes unwell? And if they are not licensed drivers, what qualifications and authority they have to act in that role? ADCU has been asking these questions repeatedly but so far we've had no response from either @transportgovuk @TfL or any of the platform companies @uber @wayve_ai @waymo. We've advising Londoners not to step foot in a driverless taxi until these questions are answered.
“TfL requires licensed private hire drivers to pass stringent checks before they are allowed to carry passengers, including medical, safeguarding and regulatory requirements designed to protect the public. So the obvious question is: has that same standard been applied here? If the person sitting in the vehicle is meant to intervene in a safety-critical situation, or deal with a passenger emergency, Londoners need to know whether they have gone through the same licensing and vetting process as every other private hire driver in this city. If not, why not?” @MayorofLondon @LondonAssembly @BrentGreens @SadiqKhan @andyburnham
@ADCUnion is in Amsterdam today, with drivers from across Europe, to mark the filing, with the Amsterdam District Court, of the Dynamic Pay Claim against Uber. The landmark collective action by drivers, led by @WorkerInfoX, is directly challenging @Uber's algorithmic pay system and demanding compensation for lost earnings and harm to drivers. Here's our General Secretary, Cristina: "I am here today, standing in solidarity with drivers across Europe, to mark this historic moment. Drivers have beaten Uber before, and we will stand with drivers across Europe as we bet Uber again." Drivers can still join the claim. Find out how at dynamicpay.org/adcu-dpc-welc…
