Bostonian hip-hop for grownups since 1990. Tommy O'Deed, Matt Reyes, and Bill Ierardi make music the old-fashioned way: for the love of it.

The Boston Celtics have now won 18 NBA Championships, the most in history. Of those 18, Bill Russell won 11; more than Jordan and LeBron combined. He is the only member of the More Rings Than Fingers Club. He is the best player in the history of the best team in NBA history.

Supersized heat waves used to be rare. No longer. A Reuters data-driven examination of global temperatures reveals the emergence of what we call heat storms. They now swarm the planet, upending life around the world. reut.rs/4zBUXtM

Even though writing on US rap & hip-hop history is still just scratching the surface, I think a very interesting book could be written about hip-hop's diaspora out into the world, with detailed chapters exploring when & how rap arrived & took root in different parts of the globe.

It's unfortunately ironic that all those braggin' & boastin' 80s MCs rapped nonstop about being #1, being stars, being rich. Yet while many persist as legendary names in hip-hop history, most of their dreams of popular & financial success would be achieved by the next generation.

When someone asks you what your song is about, you should have a more interesting answer than "It's about three and a half minutes long."

As I get older, an aspect of rap fandom I often see underappreciated is personal entry point & social context. For instance, I was 16 in 1988, so of course "Nation Of Millions" blew my mind. By the time "Illmatic" came along I was 22 and I thought it was a pretty good album. 1/6

This is a series of turntable mixes that I put together on 4-track with my friend DJ KooKoo in 1990-1991, featuring many of the popular hip-hop and club music of the time. We used to have a lot of time on our hands. soundcloud.com/matt-reyes-82…

The last time a DJ played one of our songs on an online streaming show, he commented how dope the song is, then stopped it after the first chorus. The entire song is 3:50 long and he cut it off after about 2:30. So I guess that was the limit of his attention span.

I'm old enough to remember when rappers would diss each other by accusing them of performing oral sex on women. I've lived long enough to see the rap world ridicule DJ Khaled for saying that he doesn't. Unsurprising that a guy who got lost at sea can't find the man in the boat.

Back in 1996, the artists who would become 7L & Esoteric and @Czarface_Eso came out to my home studio to record one of their first songs, which ended up on the AOI/God Complex 12" single. 22 years later I dug back into my master tapes to make this remix. youtu.be/saQqHdZ2wfA

Being inspired and creating their own style from it is how it's supposed to be.
Crazy how DOOM inspired dudes like Marci, Mach, Gunn, and Woods. What’s crazier is none of them are anything alike

Hell, you don't even "make" AI music, you just press a button on a machine and it says "You mean like this?" and you say, "Sure, whatever."
making AI music is not art

Of the growing number of creatives I'm seeing parrot the philosophy "A.I. is here to stay, we should just make the most of it", I can't help noticing it's mostly coming from established successful artists, not struggling newcomers hoping to make a dent with their original voices.
