The Boston Celtics have now won 18 NBA Championships, the most in history. Of those 18, Bill Russell won 11; more than Jordan and LeBron combined. He is the only member of the More Rings Than Fingers Club. He is the best player in the history of the best team in NBA history.

Supersized heat waves used to be rare. No longer. A Reuters data-driven examination of global temperatures reveals the emergence of what we call heat storms. They now swarm the planet, upending life around the world. reut.rs/4zBUXtM

For the first time in 46 years, the World Series will be played between two teams that have never won a championship! Best of luck to the Milwampa Rayers! Or, alternately, the Tampaukee Breways!

Even though writing on US rap & hip-hop history is still just scratching the surface, I think a very interesting book could be written about hip-hop's diaspora out into the world, with detailed chapters exploring when & how rap arrived & took root in different parts of the globe.

Hey, I'll savor the very small victory that no one responded, "No they didn't; hip-hop beats are 808s and hihats and claps, not all that stupid kick and snare stuff."
do these people not know what funk is ...

How about voting for a party neither Democrat nor Republican?

I guess for me, the "at twelve" feels a lot older than the context the question is implying. I grew up a precocious reader of anything/everything. My father took me to R-rated foreign films. By age 12 I was traveling the MBTA alone, breakdancing to rap music, stealing porn mags.
which book did you read at twelve that you definitely should not have been reading at twelve

I found & read my dad's collection of 'books you don't necessarily want the neighbors to see on your shelf', including Nabokov, Haley, Plath, Baldwin, Engels & Marx, even Mao's red book. But I guess Earl Thompson's sexually explicit "Tattoo" was probably a bit above my age range.

There is a special level of hell reserved for those who do not cut out the tendon when making chicken fingers. It's not a particularly deep nor hot level, but it remains there waiting nonetheless.

It's unfortunately ironic that all those braggin' & boastin' 80s MCs rapped nonstop about being #1, being stars, being rich. Yet while many persist as legendary names in hip-hop history, most of their dreams of popular & financial success would be achieved by the next generation.

I put on Jon Favreau's blu-ray commentary for "The Mandalorian & Grogu", and it's one of those inane pointless tracks where the director basically just narrates what's on screen: "Here's the bad guy. Here's the inside of the AT-AT. Here's where he shoots the guy." I shut it off.

This year's World Series will feature a team that's never won a championship, against either another team that's never won a championship, or another team whose last championship was 78 years ago. So that's cool!

People pointing out that the new Ben Affleck film "Animals" has the same plot as last year's Spike Lee film "Highest 2 Lowest" are halfway there, and I'd like to congratulate them on their perspicacity while also inviting them to watch Akira Kurosawa's "High And Low" from 1963.

When someone asks you what your song is about, you should have a more interesting answer than "It's about three and a half minutes long."

"Digger" is supposed to be a cautionary satire, not a fucking recipe.
Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, the planet's widest and most unpredictable glacier, is melting "more aggressively" than previously projected, meaning its impacts on global sea level rise could be double current estimates. cnn.it/4dHWdTP

As I get older, an aspect of rap fandom I often see underappreciated is personal entry point & social context. For instance, I was 16 in 1988, so of course "Nation Of Millions" blew my mind. By the time "Illmatic" came along I was 22 and I thought it was a pretty good album. 1/6

This is a series of turntable mixes that I put together on 4-track with my friend DJ KooKoo in 1990-1991, featuring many of the popular hip-hop and club music of the time. We used to have a lot of time on our hands. soundcloud.com/matt-reyes-82…
