Ọba of Benin Decorates First Lady @SenRemiTinubu With Royal Coral Beads
The Monarch 👑 Benin, Ọba Ewuare II, has honoured Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, with the prestigious Benin traditional coral beads known as Ikele. The decoration took place on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City.
With the honour, Senator Tinubu becomes the first Nigerian First Lady to receive the royal beads, a symbol of goodwill and appreciation from the Benin throne. She is the third prominent Nigerian woman to receive the honour, after retired Ẹdo State Chief Judge, Justice Esohe Ikponmwen, and former NTA Benin Network Centre Zonal Director, Mrs Pauline Igbanor.
In an address delivered on his behalf by his eldest daughter, Princess Ikuoyẹmwẹn Aimiuwu-Ewuare, Ọba Ewuare II prayed for divine wisdom and strength for President Bọlá Tinubu and other leaders. He also reaffirmed his commitment to preserving Benin’s cultural heritage and promoting peace, unity and the welfare of the people.
Mrs Tinubu expressed appreciation for the honour and pledged continued collaboration with traditional institutions, particularly in empowering rural women. She was in Ẹdo State at the invitation of Governor @m_akpakomiza to commission a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses acquired by the state government.
AYIRI EMAMI JOINS FIRST LADY SEN. OLUREMI TINUBU ON HISTORIC VISIT TO OBA OF BENIN PALACE*
Chief Ayiri Emami, last week joined the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, on a courtesy visit to the *Ọba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Ọmọ N' Ọba N' Ẹdo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, at the Ọba Palace in Benin City, Ẹdo State.
The visit was part of the First Lady's engagement in Ẹdo State under her Renewed Hope Initiative, and it was a moment of cultural pride, royal unity, and national cohesion.
Ayiri Emami, who was specially invited as a foremost traditional leader from the Niger Delta, accompanied the First Lady as she paid homage to the revered Benin throne — a throne that shares deep historical and ancestral ties with Warri Kingdom.
DIGNITARIES PRESENT:
The Royal Palace witnessed a gathering of eminent personalities including:
1. Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu — First Lady of Nigeria
2. His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo— Governor of Ẹdo State, who was present to receive the First Lady
3. Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole — Former Governor of Ẹdo State and Senator representing Ẹdo North
4. Chief Ayiri Emami
5. Other top government officials, traditional leaders, women leaders, and party stakeholders across Edo and Delta States.
Speaking on the sidelines of the visit, Ayiri Emami described the meeting as highly symbolic and refreshing.
> “The Ọba of Benin is a father to all of us. The history between Benin and Warri Kingdom is one blood, one heritage. To accompany our mother, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to the palace is an honour. This visit shows respect for our traditional institution, and it strengthens the bond between the South-South region and the Presidency. We appreciate our First Lady for her humility and love for culture,” Chief Emami stated.
The Ọba of Benin in his remarks blessed the First Lady and commended her Renewed Hope Initiative for supporting women, youths, and the vulnerable across the country. He also prayed for peace and progress in Nigeria.
Ayiri Emami’s presence at the palace further reinforces his role as a bridge-builder between traditional institutions, government, and the people
The visit ended with exchange of gifts 🎁 and royal prayers for the nation.

*BRIEF HISTORY OF UTESE NEW YAM FESTIVAL*
Utese is an ancient bilingual town in Ovia North-East LGA, Edo State. History says it was founded by Irado, one of the brothers of Ọ̀rànmiyan, when he was on his way from Ilẹ-Ifẹ to Benin in the 12th century. He stopped over in Utese and was crowned the 1st IRADO OLUTESE .
The *New Yam Festival* is one of their most sacred traditions. Yam is regarded as the King of Crops. It is taboo to eat new Yam 🍠 before OLUTESE performs the rites.
The festival is a day of thanksgiving to God, the gods of the land, and the ancestors for a bountiful harvest and for food security. It starts early morning with dancing, acrobatic displays by youths, and OLUTESE with his Ojoye moving from shrine to shrine with elders, men, women, children to offer prayers and sacrifices.
On that day, old yams from previous harvest are discarded, and the new yam is blessed and declared fit for eating. Sons and daughters of Utese at home and in diaspora return home to celebrate, promote unity, and renew their bond with the land.
Under the current OLUTESE , *HRM Idahosa Agidigbi I*, the festival has been revived and celebrated with more glamour as a symbol of cultural preservation.

From next week we'll be delving into the history and people of Akoko-Edo and some there connections with the rest of Yorùbáland.
Some Yorùbá have been Edonised or have gone through Acculturation of Ẹdo/Benin customs and traditions while some Ẹdo peoples have been influenced by Yorùbá cultural mores.
These are the themes we'll treat;
-Yorùbánised Ẹdo people
-Ẹdonised Yorùbá people
Stay tuned @sleekyneeny @TYF_DeltaEdo
