This report on the impact of school library censorship laws is a labor of love and countless volunteer hours. Please read it, share it, & use it to guide your advocacy for public schools & libraries during this election cycle & the next legislative session.
It's Banned Books Week & our report is out. And before the haters cry "they aren't banned, you can buy them on Amazon!" these books are banned from library shelves. Libraries are about access. The govt doesn't get to tell us what ideas are acceptable./1 txftrp.org/one_year_of_sb_12…

10/7/2026: The day the Texas GOP dropped the pretense of supporting parental rights and local control.

Christin's wrong about almost everything, but right about this: This committee hearing matters & real Texas parents need to let lawmakers know the effects of SB12 & SB13. @TXFreedomRead will be there with a TON of data about the damage these laws have done. Bring your stories!
The Texas Senate Committee on Education will convene on Wednesday, October 7, at 8:00 a.m. to address several interim charges, including monitoring the implementation of legislation passed last session. The hearing specifically includes SB 571, SB 12, and SB 13, all of which contain important protections for Texas children and parental rights.
I expect there will be significant testimony regarding SB 13, which strengthened Texas' mandatory school library standards, established local school library advisory councils, and expanded parental oversight of school library materials.
SB 13 was an important step forward in our efforts to stop the sexualization of children and keep inappropriate materials out of school libraries. But passing legislation is only part of the work. Implementation and enforcement matter.
In fact, this continues to be a priority of the Republican Party of Texas. The current Protect Texas Kids Legislative Priority specifically calls for enforcement of Texas laws protecting children from inappropriate sexual content.
We have already seen inconsistencies in implementation across the state, including districts that appear unwilling to fully comply with the law.
If you have been involved in auditing school libraries, filing local book challenges, serving on a library advisory council, or documenting problems with your district's implementation of SB 13, I strongly encourage you to participate in this hearing and share what you have seen.
You can testify in person or provide written testimony to members of the Senate Education Committee. Public testimony at the hearing will be limited to two minutes per person, and those submitting written testimony at the hearing are instructed to bring 10 copies with their name on each copy.
This is an important opportunity for legislators to hear directly from parents and community members about what is actually happening in Texas school libraries and where implementation of SB 13 may need to be strengthened.

First, one of a university's core missions is to preserve knowledge.
Second, sure, Godwin's law & all that--and this seems to be more about a webpage than the archive itself--but the first Nazi book burning was of Magnus Hirschfeld's library of research on gender & sexuality.

This incredible documentary won an Emmy this weekend! It has been an absolute honor to have been a part of it. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it on PBS! It’s full of incredible (& not so incredible) Texans. Don’t miss villains of the film, @MattKrauseTX & @LeighForTexas.

Pull up a chair! 2 weeks ago TX Lt. Governor @DanPatrick held a “press conference”(campaign stunt) w/TX book banning activist Bonnie Wallace. They shared a list of 2,198 “filthy, dirty, pornographic,” books Dan falsely claimed “are in all of our schools.” and “violate SB 13.” /1

Want to know more about the people helping Bonnie make her list? This is her FL accomplice Bruce Friedman on @TheDailyShow: m.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwlhhb… He’s to blame for many of the complaints on the list. Dan Patrick is allowing this guy is making decisions for Texas parents. 😳/4

@TXFreedomRead @FReadomFighters So devastating what Texas is doing to our libraries and our students. School librarians hesitant to discuss books, order more amid Texas battles to restrict titles, they say texastribune.org/2026/09/04/…

And Nate Schatzline called it banning when he talked about passing HB900. ⬇️

This is a great point. I've got lots of examples of the "It's not a book ban!" people turning around and saying, "You can't have that book here--it's banned!" For example, Ken Paxton on The 1619 Project:
Replying to @DanPatrick
@DanPatrick “No one is banning books in Texas. There are no banned books.”
@DanPatrick 30 seconds later: “These books are so explicit they’re banned in Texas prisons. They’re on the prison banned list.”
But we thought it wasn’t a ban if someone else can still buy it on Amazon?

SB13 uses subjective terms to evaluate library books & gives local districts final say. The phrase “local community values,” is in the law 3x. School boards & parents are making decisions for their communities. Dan Patrick doesn’t like their like decisions. He wants control.

Texas schools removed more books from their shelves last year than ever before, including hundreds of works of classic literature. But it’s not enough for these maniacs. txftrp.org/more_than_100_cla…
Texas school districts are brazenly disregarding laws passed by the Legislature. For too many districts, compliance comes only when lawmakers attach meaningful consequences to willful violations.
We saw this pattern with educator-misconduct reporting. Districts ignored reporting requirements for years. Only after the Legislature imposed civil liability for willful negligence did many begin taking those obligations seriously.
Still, we should be proud of our incremental wins. Texas led the way by mandating statewide school-library standards. When HB 900 was challenged, the Fifth Circuit blocked its separate vendor-rating provisions but left the library standards in place. That was a game changer. The Legislature then strengthened protections by establishing clearer prohibitions on indecent and profane materials in SB13.
In the 90th #txlege, it is time to impose serious penalties on schools that willfully disregard laws enacted to protect children and uphold parental rights.
I’m glad to see Lt. Gov. @DanPatrick continue making the protection of Texas children a priority.

So everyone knows, the list of “dirty, filthy” books @DanPatrick touted today includes Hatchet. You can’t make this up.

Never seen Little Gov @DanPatrick so desperate to change the subject. Texans are worried about rising costs of gas & groceries, data centers, transmission lines, Big Bend border wall construction, etc and he's railing about "filthy books" he already banned from school libraries

Just a reminder, these are the books these politicians and pearl clutching activists have deemed dirty, filthy, and vulgar. ⬇️
We have the newest casualty of the “parents rights,” movement in Southlake, Texas. And we can thank @AngelaPaxtonTX’s parental rights school library bill (SB 13) for keeping Texas kids safe from Pretty Perfect Kitty Corn in @CarrolIsd! /1

Hey Texans, this is a GRIFT . Do not give “Remnant Law,” your $.
They have so wildly misrepresented SB13 & what’s happening in @abileneISD. They’re implying there’s an important court case. There is not. They’ve simply filed a TEA complaint. /1

Revealing comment from lead Texas book banner Bonnie Wallace. She says her crusade goes beyond sexual content to attempt to remove from schools “content that can permanently change the way of thinking of a child.” In other words, she’s at war with the whole idea of education.

First, as pointed out yesterday: Bone was flat wrong in her initial post. She said Round Rock High School didn’t have a Bible in its catalog. It did. Her post has been shared almost 6000 times, and it’s based on a falsehood. She doesn’t care. xitter.cf/frankstrong/status/204…
