Have you been following GPISD’s decision to revoke the casting of a female student in the lead of Little Shop of Horrors? Turns out they cancelled her role & the show due to SB 12 - the “DEI ban”- not the “drag ban.” This story keeps getting dumber. 🫠 hesherman1.substack.com/p/li…

This report on the impact of school library censorship laws is a labor of love and countless volunteer hours. Please read it, share it, & use it to guide your advocacy for public schools & libraries during this election cycle & the next legislative session.
It's Banned Books Week & our report is out. And before the haters cry "they aren't banned, you can buy them on Amazon!" these books are banned from library shelves. Libraries are about access. The govt doesn't get to tell us what ideas are acceptable./1 txftrp.org/one_year_of_sb_12…

Legislation & threats in TX are leading to over compliance & mass censorship. Librarians are being forced to quietly (often secretly) remove hundreds, sometimes thousands of books or risk losing their jobs. The educational needs of students aren't being considered. /3

Christin's wrong about almost everything, but right about this: This committee hearing matters & real Texas parents need to let lawmakers know the effects of SB12 & SB13. @TXFreedomRead will be there with a TON of data about the damage these laws have done. Bring your stories!
The Texas Senate Committee on Education will convene on Wednesday, October 7, at 8:00 a.m. to address several interim charges, including monitoring the implementation of legislation passed last session. The hearing specifically includes SB 571, SB 12, and SB 13, all of which contain important protections for Texas children and parental rights. I expect there will be significant testimony regarding SB 13, which strengthened Texas' mandatory school library standards, established local school library advisory councils, and expanded parental oversight of school library materials. SB 13 was an important step forward in our efforts to stop the sexualization of children and keep inappropriate materials out of school libraries. But passing legislation is only part of the work. Implementation and enforcement matter. In fact, this continues to be a priority of the Republican Party of Texas. The current Protect Texas Kids Legislative Priority specifically calls for enforcement of Texas laws protecting children from inappropriate sexual content. We have already seen inconsistencies in implementation across the state, including districts that appear unwilling to fully comply with the law. If you have been involved in auditing school libraries, filing local book challenges, serving on a library advisory council, or documenting problems with your district's implementation of SB 13, I strongly encourage you to participate in this hearing and share what you have seen. You can testify in person or provide written testimony to members of the Senate Education Committee. Public testimony at the hearing will be limited to two minutes per person, and those submitting written testimony at the hearing are instructed to bring 10 copies with their name on each copy. This is an important opportunity for legislators to hear directly from parents and community members about what is actually happening in Texas school libraries and where implementation of SB 13 may need to be strengthened. Wednesday, October 7, 2026 8:00 a.m. Texas Capitol, E1.028 Senate Committee on Education #txlege #ProtectTexasKids @TexasGOP

First, one of a university's core missions is to preserve knowledge. Second, sure, Godwin's law & all that--and this seems to be more about a webpage than the archive itself--but the first Nazi book burning was of Magnus Hirschfeld's library of research on gender & sexuality.
After Texas State Rep. Brian Harrison and megadonor Monty Bennett publicly complained about the University of North Texas having a large archive of primary sources related to LGBTQ history in North Texas, UNT took down a website about it. Rep. Harrison is taking credit.

@DanPatrick 8/19: “Remove every book on Recover America’s “bad book list” or we will pass a law to dock your district an accountability letter grade.” Dan Patrick now: “I don’t have a list. TEA and local districts decide what books belong in schools.” jta.org/2026/09/18/united-st…

It’s NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY! 📚 If you’re looking for a book to read, may we suggest choosing one of the 2,198 books Lt Governor Dan Patrick wants removed from every school library in Texas. We’ve shared the link & some of our favorites in this thread! Happy Reading.
