אני יודע שעבור רבים מכם זו הייתה אכזבה. ודווקא משום שהביקורת מגיעה מאנשים שהשותפות היהודית-ערבית היא עבורם דרך חיים, מאנשים שנאבקים שנים על חברה משותפת ושוויונית, אני מתייחס אליה במלוא הרצינות.
חשוב לי לומר לכם: אני לא מבטל את הכאב הזה ולא מבקש מכם להניח אותו בצד. שותפות בין יהודים לערבים איננה מס שפתיים בשבילי וגם לא כלי פוליטי ליום פקודה. היא טבועה בי. היא היסוד המרכזי והאמיתי שעליו חייב להישען עתידה של המדינה שלנו. החברה הערבית היא שותפה מהותית בכל היבט של חיינו, ואין לנו שום קיום ללא חיים משותפים המבוססים על שוויון וכבוד אזרחי מלא.
בשבעה באוקטובר עמדנו יחד בשטח. באותן שעות אפלות ונוראות פעלנו כישראלים. ראינו בעינינו אזרחים ערבים שמצילים חיים בגבורה אדירה תחת אש רצחנית, שותפים מלאים לכאב הבלתי נתפס ולמאמץ ההצלה הלאומי. הדם של כולנו נספג באותה אדמה. האסון הכבד הזה הוכיח לכולנו באופן סופי שגורלנו כרוך זה בזה, לתמיד.
איננו שוכחים לרגע: האזרחים הערבים הם 20% מהחברה הישראלית. הם לא "נכס" פוליטי ולא "איום". הם אזרחים שווים, חלק בלתי נפרד מהמדינה הזו, וזכותם לבחור ולהיבחר היא זכות יסוד דמוקרטית שלא נוותר עליה לעולם.
מתוך אותה תפיסת עולם שוויונית ועמוקה, התייצבנו ללא היסוס וללא גמגום נגד פסילת רע"ם והרשימה המשותפת.
שותפות יהודית-ערבית אזרחית אמיתית אינה מחייבת הסכמה על הכול. היא מחייבת דבר בסיסי בהרבה: נכונות להילחם עם 20% מאחינו ואחיותינו האזרחים הערבים, נגד גזענות ממוסדת, להילחם בפשיעה ובאלימות בחברה הערבית, ולהבטיח ביטחון, שוויון וחיים משותפים – לצד נכונות לשרטט קו אדום מול כל מי שמבקש לפגוע בשותפות הזו.
אנחנו בונים אלטרנטיבה של אמת ושל מנהיגות שרואה את כל אזרחי ישראל. בלי פחד, בלי צביעות ובלי התנצלות. אסור לתת להחלטה אחת לפגוע בשותפות הזו שבינינו.
