For @TheIdeasLetter I wrote about Marc Bloch and the challenge of writing synthetic and structural history. Featuring the Annales, Pirenne, Keynes, fin de siècle social science, and the generalizing ambitions of Carlo Ginzburg and the micro-historians. theideasletter.org/essay/tot…

5/12 Mehrling (2006): interest rates cannot substitute for the credit system. Banks, liquidity, balance sheets, and monetary hierarchies matter. A theory that abstracts from these relationships may explain an interest-rate rule without explaining financial capitalism.

Such terrible terrible news that Perry Mehrling has passed. Hard to describe how much he taught us all. And such a wonderfully curious interlocutor. I recently returned to his brilliant & mischievous "Financialization and its discontents". Great primer. sites.bu.edu/perry/files/201…

By a weird coincidence this just came out, as scheduled for the past weeks. I managed to squeeze a mention to Perry’s passing and a dedication at the end of the acknowledgment note in the cover page right before it was scheduled to come out. A tiny homage bis.org/publications/paper-1…

I’m told Perry Mehrling has passed away. His money and banking course at Barnard was hugely formative for me and many others. This is an awful year for social thought. And I’m afraid we’re not producing many people of that caliber who can fill the ranks.

The First Great Depression of the 21st Century".

All well and good but the latter is at least to some extent a quantitive claim about relative prices (the price of what labour can produce in terms of what it can buy).
Marx’s value theory is not aimed at deriving relative prices (Marx explicitly says so in a number of places). It is primarily designed to explain the mechanisms by which a working class which produces the value receives so little of it
