๐ FINAL INCIDENT REPORT | Summerside Sunbank:
As of Monday morning, the Summerside Sunbank site has transitioned from emergency response into a recovery and operational phase. Emergency Services have officially deemed the fire out and have now cleared the scene.
City officials will now work with the PEI Fire Marshalโs Office, specialized technical experts and insurance providers to assess the affected infrastructure, investigate the cause of the fire, and determine the appropriate remediation work required.
โOur Utility team will also begin the process of safely returning solar generation to service following the necessary inspections and procedures. The affected battery infrastructure will remain isolated.
We will continue working with the Department of Environment on additional water and soil testing. Testing results will continue to be reviewed with provincial environmental and public-health officials.
Based on guidance received from the Chief Public Health Office, air quality and water testing completed to date have identified no public-health concerns associated with the incident.
The City of Summerside thanks residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the response, along with all emergency personnel, partner agencies and technical experts who supported the incident.

SUMMERSIDE SUNBANK INCIDENT REPORT | September 10, 2026, 12:00 PM
There is no significant change to report at this time.
The situation at the Summerside Sunbank site remains an active fire and under close monitoring. Summerside Fire Department and Summerside Police Services continue to have crews on site, focusing on the flare-up from last evening.
Our emergency services personnel and City staff continue to work extremely long hours to manage this situation. Many of these individuals have been away from their homes and families for extended periods, working through the day and overnight to protect our community and bring this incident to a safe conclusion.
The voluntary Shelter in Place remains in effect for residents in the immediate area. Please refer to the map included for reference.
Strong winds are currently helping to dissipate smoke, and air quality monitoring continues in cooperation with the Chief Public Health Office (CPHO) and the Department of Environment.
Residents who are experiencing smoke are reminded to:
๐ก Remain indoors where possible
๐ก Keep windows and doors closed
๐ก Turn off ventilation systems that bring outside air into your home
๐ก Avoid unnecessary travel through areas where smoke is present
Anyone experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing should seek medical care or call 911 in an emergency. The CPHO remains in contact with Prince County Hospital and Health PEI regarding the appropriate response to any symptoms related to smoke exposure.
A Reception Centre remains open at the St. Eleanors Community Centre, 1 West Drive, for residents in the affected area who require a safe place to go.
Our crews will continue to do their jobs carefully and professionally, with the safety of our community and themselves at the forefront.
We will provide another update later this afternoon, or sooner if there is a meaningful change in the situation or new information to share.
Thank you to our emergency services personnel, City staff, volunteers and response partners for their continued commitment, and to our residents for their patience and understanding.

SUMMERSIDE SUNBANK ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATE | 2:30 PM
The City of Summerside continues to work closely with emergency response partners, Chief Public Health Office (CPHO) officials, and the Department of Environment to monitor and test air and water quality across the city.
๐จ Air quality testing has been conducted throughout the event. Initial data has and continues to be compiled and shared with those partners. At this time, there is no concerns over possible health impacts.
๐ง As an extra precaution, drinking water samples from within the city have been undergoing regular and enhanced chemistry testing since Monday morning (September 7), specifically four wells located near the incident site. No abnormalities have been identified in the water to date.
Additional testing is ongoing and will remain in the days ahead.

โThe Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Heather Morrison, recognizes that people may have concerns about possible health impacts from the lithium-ion battery fire in Summerside.
Working with the Department of Environment, the City of Summerside is monitoring air and water quality in the area.
At this time, there is no evidence of long-term health effects from exposure to smoke from the fire.
In cases of direct exposure during the initial fire, hydrofluoric acid released from lithium-ion batteries can cause serious skin burns and breathing difficulties. However, this acid dissipates quickly in outdoor fire environments.
Dr. Morrison has consulted with an Atlantic Canada-based toxicologist and a lithium-ion battery response expert to discuss the situation. The Office of the CPHO has also contacted Prince County Hospital and Health PEI to ensure they are aware of and monitoring for any acute symptoms that may be related to the fire.โ
