This is so beautiful and shows why cultural specificity is so important.
Luna Lauren Vélez, voice of Rio Morales, casually making us weep at the #NBRGala. Love you mom 🥹 And thank you @NBRFilm for honoring Spider-Man: Across the #SpiderVerse as the Best Animated Film of the Year.

Yes, there are a lot of layers and references in #TheColorPurple. We even shot a fantasy sequence inspired by Celie and Shug watching 'Flying Aces' in 1926, but it didn't make the final cut. I had so much fun with the ladies tho. 🙏🏿💜✈️

There are filmmakers everywhere that would love to collaborate with you to bring your micro budget film to life. Don’t let people tell you otherwise. Find your tribe. Make your films.

Yeah. So, I bought 35 screenplays to some of the best black movies of the 90s. A golden era for black cinema. I’ve read most. But, I want to release them all for free because I believe this collection should be a birthright for black writers. Here: drive.google.com/drive/mobil…

Black Indie filmmakers, please keep going. Focus on community. Ask your friends to make films with you. Start small. Write what you can shoot. Collaborate. Keep telling your stories. Keep writing your stories. Keep capturing your stories. Please.

You’re a filmmaker even if you never sign an overall deal. You’re a writer even if you never get staffed in a writers room. You’re incredibly talented, even if you never win an award. Value your art, not the accolades. Microbudget filmmakers, we’re so proud of you ♥️🎞

The year Hattie McDaniel won her Oscar for Gone With the Wind, people had to pull favours to let her in the building, & she was made to sit at the far end of the room, against the wall, with her Agent. So No...Not the most shameful night in Oscar History. not even top 20

I’m so damn proud of this show!!! I’m grateful for all the appreciation, support and critiques. The LOVE has been overwhelming. It was a true honor and pleasure to take on this responsibility. @ShaylaCowan and I wanted an OSCARS that looked and felt different than any before it…

Black filmmakers collectively feel a responsibility to teach others because we understand how hard it is to even get in the room. We’re tired of being the only ones.

"Few know that Sembène’s [BLACK GIRL] was based on a real-life incident... The 'real' Diouana was Diouana Gomis, a 31-year-old woman from Senegal, hired as a maid and nanny for a white French family, and died by suicide less than three months later." publicbooks.org/sembenes-bla…

"The self-determination of self-distribution, that was a radical idea to me. I didn’t have to go around begging studios — I could make my film and be in conversation with an audience independently" @ava on Haile Gerima's model for Black film independence nytimes.com/2021/10/15/movie…

There are indie filmmakers out there who would LOVE to partner with you to bring your vision to life. Do NOT let “NOs” from studios, corporations, or grants keep you from telling your stories. Network across. Find your tribe. Make your films.
