🎉Great news! The new paper ‘Palms of the past: can morphometric phytolith analysis inform deep time evolution and palaeoecology of Arecaceae?’ in @annbot by William Brightly and co-authors is now #free for a limited time. (1/8) 👉botany.fyi/ji8yrm #Paleobotany #AoBpapers

66 million years ago, an asteroid impact wiped out nearly 75% of life on Earth, including the non-avian dinosaurs. But a new paper finds that flowering plants weathered the cataclysmic close of the Mesozoic surprisingly well🌸☄️ My latest for @NYTScience: nytimes.com/2023/09/12/scien…

Corbin made the most beautiful illustration of Morotopithecus and the vegetation of the early Miocene! He was terrific to work with and his painting really helps bring the landscape to life. #fossilfriday

Intertrappean deposits of Upparhatti, Karnataka. Visited with the family that helped me and my long time GSI colleague Anantharaman 16 yrs ago (car photo). Shared photos with them. What was outcrop is now mostly leveled and tilled farm land and housing.

Despite little remaining outcrop of intertrap sediments we managed to find a slope with bits of turtle and clam shell that with closer inspection revealed a large deposit of more complete turtles in cross section that included other skeletal elements.

After initial difficulties we found the area with our old sites. It is now mostly leveled and tilled farmland. To put those sites into temporal context we collected samples for pmag and Ar/Ar dating—work done by @UCBerkeley Andy Tholt & Paul Renne & @RtmUniversity @DhobaleAnup

After a well deserved celebratory dinner we’re now headed north of Nagpur to Jabalpur to revisit some sites we visited in 2019. Stay tuned for more updates soon.

A few of us stayed back an extra day and worked with the locals to finish off the excavation and lid up the jackets for travel back to Nagpur. The heaviest jacket was 1 ton and required lifting with a backhoe.

India Field Update. 1st leg of our season in Upparatti near Gokak in Karnataka is complete. It’s an area with K-Pg intertrappean deposits that I last visited in 2007. The intervening 16 yrs has seen a lot of landscape change due to farming and housing development. 🧵

With the geochron and palynology samples we collected we think we’ll have a compelling case to come back to collect the rest of the specimen. Next, we’re off to Gujarat, where we’ll be visiting several sites—including the site of the snake Sanajeh found within a sauropod nest.

Despite being from a small individual, the jacket weighed ~400 lbs and took 6 of us to haul from the site, wading across the river and up the hill to our vehicle. We’ll aim to prep it and the other fossils we collected from the site this year.

India Field Update! In Nagpur enjoying Holi festival, having just finished 2nd leg of our season near Jabalpur, MP. The first Indian dinosaurs ever reported (1828) are from the MP site Bara Simla. The site remains important, but we were in MP to visit a site we found in 2019.🧵

Kicking off my first Tweet with this stunning 3D model of an Elongate dendritic phytolith coming from the inflorescence bracts of wild emmer wheat. Thank you @StrombergLab for helping to set up this project! Looking forward to start the shape analysis of the models soon!
