The bladderlike inflated fruits of L. incerta enable seed dispersal as tumbleweeds, which may be responsible for the extensive distribution of this genus across the open and dry habitats of Central Asia. 🎉 Great news! The paper ‘Same-sex neighbours grow better than opposite-sex neighbours across three plant species’ in @annbot by Suqin Fang and co-authors is now #free for 2 weeks 🧵(1/7)

🌳 The response also varied between species and sexes. Female seedlings were most sensitive to neighbouring plants in the herbaceous species and least sensitive in the tree. In males, the pattern was reversed. (6/7)
🌍 These findings suggest that root-mediated recognition of a neighbour's sex may influence how dioecious plants grow and compete, potentially contributing to the sex ratios and spatial distribution of plants in natural communities. (7/7)
