September 2026 newsletter: Child-centred policing, an immature concept
🗞️ New research suggests the idea is still in its infancy. But there may be limits to a version of procedural justice unable to deal with persistent racial profiling

”These figures demonstrate that racial disproportionality is not confined to a single police force or tactic. They demand a serious examination of how police powers are exercised, whose behaviour is treated as threatening, and whether existing accountability mechanisms are capable of addressing entrenched inequalities

👁️Oppose facial recognition @MayorofGM
We've brought together leading rights groups and racial justice organisations to tell the Mayor of Manchester to #StopFacialRecognition
This tech is 250 times more likely to misidentify black women than white subjects and it puts all of our rights and liberties at risk.

👁️NEWS: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood calls on police chiefs to use Orwellian facial recognition at protests
"The Home Secretary’s calls for a dystopian constellation of mask bans, facial recognition and ANPR to police lawful expression are a chilling indictment of our right to protest.
No community deserves to live in fear, but a policing response to offensive or controversial views must not dilute rights that we all rely on.
The police must deal with criminal offences robustly, but stripping lawful protestors of their anonymity merely for expressing controversial views is a dark path to go down.
Protestors across the political spectrum, from environmental campaigners and anti-capitalism hacktivists to dissidents in Hong Kong, have used masks to protect their identity against legitimate concerns, including the loss of their job or income, press and media attacks, social ostracisation and unwarranted intelligence gathering by the police.
Allowing the state to restrict protest rights in relation to views we don’t like sets a dangerous precedent for us all when we want to challenge the status quo or speak truth to power."

So far, the #spycops inquiry has only looked at the historic abuses of one undercover unit, the Special Demonstration Squad.
If the heavily implicated Home Office gets it's way, the National Public Order Intelligence Unit won't face the same scrutiny.

The @ucpinquiry into #spycops is under threat. The Home Office has launched a sham consultation process in a bid to prevent the inquiry from finishing it's work.

Live facial recognition puts ALL our rights & freedoms at risk. Adding children - some as young as 11 years old - and subjecting them to biometric ID checks is unacceptable.

🚨NEWS: The Met Police plan to install PERMANENT facial recognition cameras on #OxfordStreet
"Plans to turn the newly walkable Oxford Street into a permanent digital police line-up using live facial recognition software would be a mistake.
A face scan is as unique as a fingerprint. The police cannot take your fingerprints when you are not suspected of wrongdoing. Taking a faceprint is no less intrusive just because it happens remotely.
The Mayor (@MayorofLondon) should abandon the plans to roll out Orwellian biometric software which would instead place London in the company of authoritarian regimes."

he Metropolitan Police firearms officer who fatally shot Chris Kaba will no longer face disciplinary proceedings, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed.
In January, the IOPC made the decision to pause the serving of gross misconduct papers on Sergeant Martyn Blake until the law change relating to the use of force test in police misconduct cases came into effect and its impact was clear.
Last month, the IOPC issued a policy position which outlined that, in order to apply the law in the most fair and proportionate way, in current cases where case to answer decisions were made using the civil law test, disciplinary action was no longer justified and proceedings should be withdrawn unless there were exceptional circumstances.
