1. Struggling with identification of bees/pollinators and various other tricky insects groups? It has been my life's mission to make things easier, so check out this chain. Firstly, Steven Falk Flickr: flickr.com/photos/63075200@N…. It's a virtual museum and field adventure.

Eurasian Jay Garrulus glandarius, flying over a small London park yesterday with a crop full of acorns that would later have been cached for later consumption. Many Oaks Quercus spp. would have been 'planted' by these birds. Cropped (the images, that is!).

Two-headed ant. This worker Lasius niger has been attacked by a worker Lasius flavus in one of the ant wars that must take place daily. Presumably its compatriots dismembered the attacker but were unable to remove the head now locked in place by rictus of the jaw muscles.

This Flickr account is an amazing resource for anyone trying to identify / learning to recognise some bees! 🐝
Following my recent Lasioglossum & Halictus workshop at the Reading @bwars2000 weekend, I've updated my Flickr Halictus folder: flickr.com/photos/63075200@N…. Improved specimen photos and updated text. View on a laptop/PC for best functionality.

Today I found a slime mold (Fuligo septica) sent a picture to my friend Alex Hyde who told me they pulse as they grow so fast. So I went back and did a timelapse video. OMG I had no idea! 1 is the whole slime mold and the 2nd one is at 5 * magnification!!!

For many many years, I’ve wanted an opportunity to set up a little pop-up hide to see into the secretive lives of Jack Snipes. Set up at a promising looking pool in Nottinghamshire the other day, and wowzas!!!!! 3 bobbing away in front of me tonight!

The stunning Ginkgo tree at Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, England.
One of the oldest tree species on Earth, its leaves glow in autumn of a magnificent golden hue.

It's such a special moment when the light first hits. Standing in the early pre-dawn silence, you watch the sky get fractionally paler and paler, until the sun suddenly breaks cover over the hills with a sharp flash and runs down the slopes into the valley, bringing brightness to the trees and the river and the path ahead. It never gets old.

One day I’m gonna get a sharp shot of one of these Ruby tailed wasps in flight 🤩 Definitely a nemesis species for me as I’ve only see this one and it was quick and very erratic.

So why are the words/pledges of NATO Supreme Commander (an American) so much at variance with the words and actions of POTUS @FrankRGardner? I’m pretty confused.

I am a bit addicted to photographing Ravens & then sharing them with all of you!! They were really friendly on their second visit today & they came within a few feet & mutual groomed. The first one might be my favourite yet. It might be a tad corny but I will call it soul mates😁

I've added a Blog post to my website today. It's about springtails and the method I use to photograph them. There are lots around in our #Staffs garden at the moment. #collembola #photography

Some of the plants still producing flowers in our garden...
Mostly being enjoyed by Common Carder #bumblebees and Hummingbird Hawk-moths, but a few hoverflies and wasps visiting them, too.

A dream photograph for me today!
A beewolf in flight predating a honeybee and just about to drop into its nest hole (bottom left)
In the nest the paralysed bee will be sealed into a chamber with an egg. Well I’m guessing you have seen “Alien”…

The villages of the #peakdistrict always stop me in my tracks when I see them dreaming on quiet mornings. All was peaceful on the lanes as I watched this scene, the early sun brushing the trees, turning them to gold here and there, and the mist still lazily drifting across the fields. Even the old gate looked like it needed to stretch and wake up.

Quiet for birds on today's walk, but I had an amazing experience. I was sitting with the Ravens when a Buzzard called overhead. Chips flew up & they had an ariel battle. When the Buzzard left, Chips treated me to some acrobatics. How lucky I am to be so close to nature!

A short video of the African River Martins, without doubt the bird of the trip.

And - with permapine logs for scale - a male splendid fairywren. These logs are around the edge of the camping grounds at Gluepot. Shows how truly tiny these birds are.
