Data can inform or misinform, depending on who uses it and why.
Nigeria plays a dangerous game of numbers. This statement particularly holds true in light of the NBS' newly released and revised Labour Force Statistics Report (LFSR) for Q4 2022 and Q1 2023. The NBS' new methodology aligns with the International Labour Organisation’s standards.
The new methodology has benefits such as expanding the working population (to 15 years+), which increases the working population and makes the aggregate labour input correspond more with national output (nominal GDP).
However, it glosses over Nigeria’s chronic battle with falling household spending and a disproportionate amount of low-paying informal jobs.
