Rapid advances in emerging biotechnologies bring new and evolving risks, including the potential misuse of scientific knowledge and unauthorized access to sensitive biological data.
To respond to these emerging challenges, the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism #CICTE of @OAS, organized the training “Safeguarding Advanced and Emerging Biotechnologies,” held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from September 28-30.
Over the three-day training, researchers, life sciences professionals, and information technology specialists from Argentina’s public and private sectors heard from U.S. biotech experts and strengthened their knowledge of:
🔹 Research security
🔹 Mitigating risks of Dual-use research of concern (DURC)
🔹 Cyberbiosecurity
🔹 Institutional risk management, due diligence, and governance frameworks
Participants are expected to implement research security best practices driven by the United States, assess risks associated with the misuse of biological technologies, and contribute technical inputs to national governance mechanisms.
It is our commitment to continue working with our member states to promote the responsible management of advanced biotechnologies as part of broader efforts to advance regional security, in line with U.S. standards.
This activity is part of the Safeguarding Advanced and Emerging Biotechnologies project, implemented by the OAS/CICTE. #Biosecurity #Biotechnology #ResearchSecurity #Cyberbiosecurity #CICTE #OAS #Argentina

Signing a Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation MOU with Paraguay is just another step in the continued growth of our relationship between our two countries. We’ve always had strong links between the United States and Paraguay, and now, those links are even stronger.

ALT Secretary Marco Rubio stands next to Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano. Both officials hold a folder of their respective signed Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation memorandum of understanding in Washington, DC on August 4, 2026. They stand behind a polished wood table with table tents directly in front of each officials that reads Paraguay and United States of America. Behind the officials are displays of U.S. and Paraguayan flags, two wood chairs, and a hanging framed portrait of former Secretary of State Colin Powell. (State Department/Freddie Everett)
