Excerpt from G.I. Gurdjieff Paris Meetings 1943, p. 233-4: RZ: I asked you last Thursday if there exists a means for developing attention. You told me that attention was in proportion to self-remembering. You told me to look particularly within myself. I ask you this especially because I was not able to put my attention on the reading of Beelzebub. I understood in the course of this week that the attention is the ‘I’. So many different ‘me’s; so many different attentions. I would like to ask you if there are special means to develop the attention other than those for developing the ‘I am’. GURDJIEFF: I can tell you one thing: the means do not exist. I don’t know any. But today I want to explain everything simply. For example, in Beelzebub I know that there is everything that needs to be known. It’s a very interesting book. Everything is there: everything that exists, everything that has existed and everything that can exist. The beginning, the end, all the secrets of creation of the world— it is all there. But it must be understood and understanding depends on the individual. The more a man has been instructed in a certain way, the more he understands. Objectively, each one can understand according to his level, because this is an objective book, and everyone ought to understand something in it. One person will understand only one part in it and another a thousand times more. Now, find the means to place your attention on all of Beelzebub in order to understand it. This will be your task, and it is a good way to maintain real attention. If you can put real attention on Beelzebub, you will be able to have real attention in life. You did not know this secret. In Beelzebub there is everything. I have said that before—even how to make an omelet. Among other things, this is also explained; and at the same time, there is not a word in Beelzebub about cooking. So, put your attention on the reading of Beelzebub, a different attention from the one you are used to, and you will be able to have the same attention in life.

In Meetings with G.I. Gurdjieff in Paris 1944, there are references to three other books: Book Studio 2009: reference to Transcripts of Gurdjieff's Wartime Meetings 1941-46, published by Book Studio in 2009. Patterson 2000: reference to Voices in the Dark: Esoteric, Occult & Secular Voices in Nazi-Occupied Paris, 1940-44, published by William Patrick Patterson in 2000. Dolmen Meadows 2017: reference to G.I. Gurdjieff Paris Meetings 1943, published by Dolmen Meadows Editions in 2017. These references are included to note previously published versions of a specific meeting note. Out of the 43 meetings, 11 were previously published in the referenced books. Differences between Paris 1944 and these books are noted as well. I realize now that a bibliography would have been helpful to the reader when encountering these references in the text.

Excerpt from Meetings with Gurdjieff in Paris 1944, Thursday, November 2, 1944: “MR. GURDJIEFF: If you’re happy, keep being shit until your last breath. As you are now, you will die like a dog. You are a nullity. Do you get it? So now you don’t want to die like a dog. You want to die like a man. What assessment do you give it? Do you understand this difference? It will be one of the best factors for voluntary suffering. With this understanding comes the desire to do everything necessary to change. MME. DE SALZMANN: Do you understand what Mr. Gurdjieff wanted to tell you? MR. GURDJIEFF: If it’s only with the head, then you’re not interested. You spoil the atmosphere. We have understood that we are nullities. So we want to become worthy men. At the moment we are “men” in quotes. We decide to become men without quotes. What is the quality of your desire? It all depends on that. If you really desire this change, you can make a sacrifice. For example, if you’ve got it, eat only one time instead of four. If you do nothing, you will never be transformed.”

"Mr. Gurdjieff: In this work, the role of your head is to act as a reminding factor. It is only useful for that. It has no value by itself. To work only with the head is harmful. Stop. Anyone who only works with his head is a candidate for a madhouse." - Thursday, November 2, 1944 Meetings with G.I. Gurdjieff in Paris 1944 (Translated) a.co/d/h6c6G5w #Amazon via @amazon

Excerpt from Thursday, June 22, 1944: "B.: After the exercise you gave me to do with my father, and thinking about my parents and my life, I felt more than ever that I had to pay not only for my past bad manifestations, but also for all the good manifestations received from them, the life they made me, and all that they gave me. I wanted to ask if there was something I could do right now to start paying off my debt to them. MR. GURDJIEFF: You cannot pay yet. Pay by preparing to be able and worthy to pay. There is nothing to do but what we do. You prepare to be able to pay. You can’t do it yet. You have no data. You study. We are preparing to become capable of leading a human life. With this we pay."
