We modelled it: a mature African energy market could be worth ~$100 billion a year.
Almost none of it exists today.
Here's what I mean 👇🏾
In the Nordics, electricity isn't just generated, it's traded, balanced and optimised in real time. Producers buy power when it's cheap, sell when it's high, and get paid to keep the grid stable. A multi-billion-dollar industry sitting on top of the grid.
In much of Africa, that entire layer doesn't exist — because we're still solving for access.
So on the new episode of Solardey, I sat down with Pia Malmström Lawson, Marketing Manager & Co-owner of Energy Opticon, to ask one question: what would that market be worth if Africa built it?
We ran the numbers — Nord Pool's traded volumes, IEA demand outlooks, global balancing markets — and landed at roughly $100B/year in energy trade. (A projection, not a published figure — the full build-up is in the episode.)
The point isn't the exact number. It's that there's a whole industry here waiting to be built — and Africa has the resources, the demand, and the young talent to build it.

Reflections from Nordic–Nigeria Connect Conference in Lagos ✨
It’s been almost three weeks since I returned to Sweden, and I’ve had time to reflect on the inspiring experience of attending the Nordic–Nigeria Connect conference.
Nigeria is a viable market for Nordic companies, the vibrant youthful demographic, favorable climate, and infrastructural gaps present huge opportunities for building stronger bilateral trade relationships.
Key takeaways from the conference:
🌍 Youthful energy: Nigeria’s young population is eager to engage with innovation and entrepreneurship.
⚡ Renewable energy potential: Demand for sustainable power solutions creates space for Nordic expertise in solar, storage, and EV infrastructure.
🌱 Agriculture opportunities: Modernizing agriculture with Nordic technology can unlock productivity and food security.
🏗️ Infrastructure deficit: Gaps in transport, digital, housing, and utilities open doors for EPC projects and SME partnerships.
🤝 SMEs as drivers: Collaboration between Nordic suppliers and Nigerian SMEs is key to scalable and impactful growth.
As a Nigerian-born, Sweden-based entreprenuer and solar energy consultant, I see my dual cultural and professional background as a unique strength. It allows me to bridge perspectives, facilitate trade, and contribute to meaningful collaborations that advance both regions.

China’s operations in Nigeria’s conflict-prone regions deserve serious investigation. Despite ongoing insecurity, I’ve never heard China voice concern about safety in Nigeria. Instead, they seem to double down, expanding their mining and investment activities as if nothing is wrong.
