MINISTER OF POWER LEADS NIGERIAN DELEGATION TO BEIJING FOR POWER AND OTHER INVESTMENT TALKS The Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has led a Nigerian delegation to Beijing for strategic engagements with major Chinese engineering, financing and industrial institutions. The delegation met with CMEC, Sinomach Group, SINOSURE, Standard Chartered Bank and CNEEC, with discussions focused on expanding Nigeria’s transmission capacity, improving grid reliability, developing generation and hydropower projects, and securing financing for critical electricity infrastructure. The delegation also witnessed the factory acceptance test of transmission cables at Hengfei Cable’s Changsha Industrial Park. Tegbe further invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in steel, automotive manufacturing, digital infrastructure, data centres, cold-chain logistics and sugar processing.

75,000 MW IN 1 YEAR. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, says decentralised generation, renewable energy and local manufacturing will drive his strategy to transform Nigeria’s power sector. He said ​‌‍‍‍‍⁠⁠‌‍‌⁠‍‍⁠‌‍‌​his administration would combine solar, gas and hydroelectric power, while rehabilitating the existing hydro stations to expand electricity generation to 75,000MW. “For now, any presidential candidate who is not giving you a plan for 50,000 megawatts is behind the time. Nigeria has passed the age where we need 10,000 megawatts or 20,000 megawatts,” he said.

80% ELECTRICITY ACCESS IN 5 YEARS TARGET- FG The Federal Government has pledged to raise electricity access above 80 per cent within five years and close the gap between installed and available power generation within three years as part of measures to address the energy crisis undermining Nigeria’s manufacturing sector. The commitment was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, during a presentation on ‘Industrialisation and Regional Competitiveness: The Role of Power’ at the just-concluded Nigeria Economic Summit Group event in Lagos. The minister also pledged to align with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s target of reducing Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection losses to below 16.92 per cent within three years.

25,000MW POWER IN 100 DAYS The presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement, Esther Okereke, has pledged to raise Nigeria’s electricity generation to 25,000MW within her first 100 days in office if elected president in 2027.

NERC DISSOLVES THE BOARD OF KADUNA DisCo. NERC has issued an Interim Order (Order No: NERC/2026/086) dissolving the board of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Plc (KAEDC) effective August 10, 2026, pursuant to sections 75–79 of the Electricity Act 2023. This decisive action follows severe financial insolvency, with KAEDC accumulating over ₦118.6 billion in additional market debt under ASI Engineering Limited by May 2026, bringing total market obligations to approximately ₦456.5 billion. Additionally, the utility remitted only 41.93% of its adjusted market invoices in 2025, recorded ATC&C losses of 71.88%, invested only ₦2.48 billion against a capital requirement of ₦24.51 billion, and maintained customer metering coverage of less than 36%. To ensure uninterrupted service delivery and operational stability, an interim board of Special Directors has been constituted, chaired by Dr. Abdullahi Garba, while Dr. Abubakar Umar Hashidu has been appointed as Administrator for an initial 6-month term. Furthermore, Afrexim will coordinate a transparent 12-month competitive process to secure a competent replacement core investor. Electricity distribution services across the KAEDC franchise area remain safe and uninterrupted.
