I think about this all the time: “What's surprising is not that things stop working sometimes, but that any of this works at all, ever.”
I just published my first-ever newsletter! In it, I cover - the secret reasons why all software is terrible - the joys of video editing with @descript - the INCREDIBLE release of Dwarf Fortress by @KitfoxGames I'd love to hear your thoughts! andrewedstrom.substack.com/p…

Anybody have good vendor lock-in horror stories from personal experience? Please share them! Of particular interest are stories that don't involve the vendor going bankrupt, although a vendor discontinuing a service counts.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ve reduced complexity just because you moved it somewhere else.

Some people thought making sketchbooks out of garbage was a cool skill to have, so I am going to teach you how to do it if you also think digging through stranger’s recycling bins on the curb could be a fun distraction from all of the terrible things in the world.

Back during the 2009 recession there were no jobs anywhere and I couldn’t afford to eat or do really anything but sit in my house, so I started dumpster diving for old books and paper to rebind into sketchbooks because it was a fun distraction and all you need is thread and glue.

“Why did prehistoric humans draw on caves walls” looks man every answer to this is going to be a roundabout way of saying “because no one told them not to”

The Art of Not Being Governed (2009), James C. Scott
We need a unified aesthetic theory for why mountain/highland peoples around the world are so swagged out

So many founders who emphasized on “culture fit” for years are now whining about how their workforce is too workshy, too politically inclined and not motivated enough. And instead of doing an honest accounting of where their hiring went wrong, they seem to blame everyone else.

To clarify, why I’m sceptical of corporate DEI efforts - it’s mostly ineffectual - gives rise to a bureaucratic apparatus that’s more concerned with symbolic gestures like sending people to grace hopper while HR fires people who advocate for things like pay transparency

So DHH waited until the tech economy soured to post this anti-DEI screed. shorturl.at/ajwAR Even if you’re sceptical of corporate DEI efforts (🤚), you need to recognize that it isn’t in your own best interest if CEOs are using this to drive *their own* ideological agenda.

it’s so fucking funny that elon musk would be like “twitter is a hardcore coding company now” and then ask engineers to email him code weekly because he doesn’t know how to use github

I wonder how many of these "we're going back to core tech" guys were pushing to launch 1000 features a year to build their empires.

Config mgmt was my old team and this looks fairly legit. key storage may have changed since I left. General agreement with the thread that container apps, etc are deployable, but infra particularly new or reinstall of bare metal would be affected.
so now that the dust has settled — it sounds like the last person with membership in the group that allows them to turn on writes to config-management left while writes were still locked, and the identity management that would allow them to get into the group is down (:
