📣 Publishing folk, are we listening?
The #ReflectingRealities 2023 report is out, and the numbers are a hard read:
📉 17% of UK kids’ books featured racially minoritised characters (down from 30% in 2022).
📉 7% had racially minoritised main characters (halved from 14%).
This isn’t just disappointing—it’s a wake-up call.
Our founder @JRichardsAuthor challenged the industry at @_thebookseller children’s conference to be braver and create space for bold, joyful stories that centre all kids—not just as a trend but as a true commitment.
At @storymixstudio we’ll continue to work for change. Thank you @storyriver and @clpe1 for all you do!

CLPE's new 'Reflecting Realities' report is out today. A MUST read 📖 #ReflectingRealities #edutwitter
Friends, I don’t think anyone is remotely surprised at the findings that rep in kidlit has almost HALVED in the last year. This is a reflection of the world around us (because books are political, even kid ones) and how publishing in general will always do less if they can.

Publishing friends, if I have to edit or read another middle grade full of fat jokes, I’m going to absolutely lose my shit - and you should ALSO feel this way.
If it comes across your desk, you should be flagging that they are not okay and can be really harmful esp. for EDs.
THE BEST NEWS. YAY @ge_summers 🎉🎉🎉

contemporary romance authors I am begging you not to make your professor characters under 25. this is not realistic, and also, why are we all so afraid of making romance love interests over 30?

Chilling note of Sunak Johnson meeting says victims would 'die anyway'
Where do you start unpicking the horrendous disclosures in today's proceedings?

Watch #Partygate @Channel4 right now, record it..
Play it on loop until the General Election
Never forget the disdain with which this govt treated the vulnerable, the elderly, the children, the lonely, those who died alone.
While their "associates" profited from VIP Lane deals
Watch out for #Partygate on @Channel4 tonight at 9.30. In it I’m playing Boris Johnson, both vocally and physically, filmed over the shoulder and at distance so as to blend with the real news footage. ‘Partygate’ is a tough watch in places but a very important one..
