Yongqi Gao was a good friend and an excellent scientist. His strong passion for collaboration – to promote research and bring together people from different nations and cultures - has left a big mark on the Norwegian-Chinese research collaboration
Honoring Prof. Yongqi Gao’s impactful contributions to climate research across Eurasia, especially on the ocean and cryosphere link.springer.com/journal/37…… We miss you, Yongqi @Nansensenteret @forskningsradet @Geofysen @BjerknesBCCR @ToreFurevik @KikkiKleiven @ShutingDK @TorEldevik

To figurar som viser at ekspertane konsekvent har bomma på kor raskt det grøne skiftet ville koma: Sol inn, kull ut.
Two things we keep getting consistently wrong: 1⃣ Vastly overestimating future coal demand 2⃣ Massively underestimating future generation of solar PV Love these graphics from @rethink_x

In contrast to the recent brutal cold, December 2023 observed well above average temperatures across most all of North America stretching up into the Arctic. This again highlights the importance of regional variability. Data: data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/. Globally it was record warm.

Three #ERA5-based charts you shouldn't miss this month: - November consolidates 2023 as the warmest year on record - #C3S - Few cold anomalies scattered in the November warm anomalies - @ScottDuncanWX - Global monthly temperature 1940 to 2023 - @neilrkaye @esaclimate

Trends in December precipitation show wetter conditions across the Barents Sea region, such as around sea ice loss. I've added a new script to produce this graphic monthly, along with my other #Arctic climate trend plots Data psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/da…. Info doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-23-00…

I november gjekk lavtrykkene lengre sør enn vanleg.
November 2023 was Europe's wettest November on record according to ERA5 reanalysis (since 1940) with total precipitation exceeding 1.5 times the 1991-2020 average.

Far from what is needed for the 1,5 deg target, but peak emission will be an important step in the right direction.
The @IEA is estimating that fossil CO2 emissions will decline to 2015 levels by 2030, based on Stated Policies. All the heavy lifting is done by wind, solar, electric vehicles, relative to the pre-Paris Baseline. Emissions start declining from 2025. iea.org/reports/net-zero-roa…

Over the last week I've seen a LOT of footage of flooding around the world. I thought I'd put them here in one place 🧵 #floods #ClimateEmergency #degrowth 1. Greece (1/13) xitter.cf/us_stormwatch/status/1…
Catastrophic floods have absolutely devastated Central Greece. Zagora, Greece received 30 inches of rain in one day. That’s more rain than London typically sees in a year. 🎥 @RomainChvt
