NEW: The U.S. is targeting the Sinaloa Cartel’s leadership—and the corruption networks Treasury says protect its operations just miles from the border. @USTreasury announced sanctions against 21 individuals and 25 entities, including Ismael Zambada Sicairos, known as “Mayito Flaco”—El Mayo’s son and, according to Treasury, the current leader of Los Mayos. He was born in Anaheim and holds both U.S. and Mexican citizenship. Also targeted: the ex-husband of Baja California’s governor, his brother and Mexicali’s former public security director. Treasury accuses them of facilitating cartel activities, taking bribes or laundering money. The action aims to disrupt trafficking routes through Tijuana and Mexicali into the U.S., blocking assets under U.S. jurisdiction and generally prohibiting Americans from doing business with those sanctioned.
