Reminder to infrequent travelers: neverssl.com is a great website to try if you're unsure if the WiFi is working. Captive portals still get hinky with https even in 2022 🫠 Then ofc you should use a VPN (I use Google One) on public WiFi.

I am shocked by the loss of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe. He was such an important leader and I was honored to have spent time with him. Our hearts are with his loved ones—and all of our friends in Japan.

As a tech lead or eng manager, you so frequently get request from above or from other teams to drop what you are doing and work on this thing they need, *now*. During my 4 years at Uber after asking these questions, 9 out of 10 times it turned out it wasn't really urgent:

A reminder of the rules: - map, filter and reduce are more readable for simple things - for…in is more readable for (more than slightly) complex loops - reduce is not a multi tool, for loops are - break up long chains, .forEach is an abomination
I'm growing wary of map/reduce/filter in Swift. It's tempting to use new syntax that's easier to type. Problem is that it usually results in code that's harder to read. I just replaced .reduce() code with a for loop because something written a week ago was hard to understand.

You know, I think it was like 10 years before I realized that the "Core" in all those Apple libraries is a pun on apples

Not just inside the language. The whole ecosystem conforms to patterns shaped by its rules. Go and ObjC are like this, too. It makes things fit together very well, by design. At the other end, in C++ and JavaScript there are no rules. Anything is possible and everything is done.
It's a testament to how well the Rust ownership/borrowing discipline works in practice that people think you could just bolt it onto some other language. But, in fact, the reason it works so well is that the rest of the language was carefully designed around it.
