Grant Wilson had not started a game at Indiana. He came in at halftime today and threw the touchdown that won it. Indiana beat Minnesota 23 to 16 in overtime. Josh Hoover started and was struggling, so Curt Cignetti went to his backup for the second half, and in overtime Wilson threw a 25 yard touchdown pass to end it. That game was also absurd on its own. Minnesota hit a 60 yard field goal with 24 seconds left to go in front. Indiana answered with a 60 yard field goal of its own with 2 seconds left. Then overtime, then Wilson. Now here is the part that makes him worth 500 words. This is Grant Wilson's seventh season of college football. Seventh. It is also his last one. He started at Fordham in 2021 and 2022. He transferred to Old Dominion and started 14 games there. Then in the second week of 2024, against East Carolina, he dislocated his elbow and tore tendons in his triceps and his wrist. He went into the transfer portal after that. Several schools offered him a chance to go be their starting quarterback. He turned all of them down and went to Indiana to be a backup. His explanation was short. It is hard to turn down Curt Cignetti. So he sat. And while he sat, third on the depth chart, he spent his time teaching Fernando Mendoza how to play the position. Mendoza went on to win the Heisman Trophy, and the way Mendoza described him was as a full time quarterback fundamentals coach. Then the NCAA granted Wilson a seventh year. He beat out Tyler Cherry for the backup job again this fall, and he went right back into the same role he had been in all along, which is the one where you prepare all week to play zero snaps. Here is how he talks about that role. "I know my role." He says he embraces it every single day. He calls the whole thing a long journey. Cignetti says Wilson is as good a team player as anybody on that roster, and that he probably wants to coach when he is finished. A man who could have spent the last two years starting somewhere else chose instead to hold a clipboard, teach a Heisman winner his footwork, and wait. Today they finally handed him the thing, in overtime, with everything on it. He threw a touchdown and Indiana won.

I’m sure you have seen the video of the 6 year old who shot the teacher in Newport News. The woman who is holding him and protecting him is exceptional. While this kid verbally abuses the officers and calls her a bi$ch - she holds him, she protects him. Even after what he did until the police finally escort the child away. This is a tragic situation but the compassion this woman exhibited to this child is worth public accolade. She was calm. The child was calm with her and followed her directions. She was so brave. It’s easy to criticize public schools. But when you see someone like this keeping the officers calm, the child calm and herself calm all while providing helpful information - quite frankly - she deserves a medal. Whoever you are - thank you for being an exceptional human being on such a tragic day.

When the Kansas City Chiefs invited Kahlil Benson to rookie minicamp this spring, they weren't planning on him making the team. They needed bodies. Someone to fill out drills alongside 75-plus other hopefuls. The Chiefs' own player personnel staff basically admitted it, they called his agent mostly to add a practice body, and give the kid a brief chance to prove he belonged. "There's certainly, in this case, probably some luck involved," the team's assistant GM said. Benson had reason to be overlooked. He'd started at right tackle for Indiana's historic national championship team in 2025, but he went undrafted, all seven rounds, nobody called. Even in the national title game itself, he'd graded out as the lowest-rated blocker on his own offense. Scouts saw the size, 6-foot-6 and 319 pounds, but called his tape inconsistent. So he arrived in Kansas City as an afterthought, on a contract with zero guaranteed money, buried on a 90-man roster that didn't even seem to need another tackle. Then he just kept winning. He impressed the coaches enough to earn a real contract. Then he climbed the depth chart. Then he won a starting job outright. And when the Chiefs' first-round left tackle went down with a back injury before Week 1, Andy Reid made a stunning call: he'd start the undrafted rookie at left tackle. Not just any game. Patrick Mahomes' first game back from a torn ACL, on Monday Night Football, protecting his blind side, against the Denver Broncos, one of the most fearsome pass rushes in football, a defense that led the NFL in sacks each of the last two seasons. It was, on paper, a setup for disaster. Benson had barely even played left tackle before. He was terrific. Benson didn't allow a single pressure in the entire first half against that Denver pass rush, and finished the night having given up just one, on 32 pass-blocking snaps. Per Next Gen Stats, he allowed the fewest pressures of any rookie offensive tackle in Week 1, including three first-round picks. Mahomes stayed clean. The Chiefs won. Andy Reid does not take risks like that lightly. He'd never had reason to before. The kid who showed up as a practice body just protected the most important player in football, and didn't flinch. The NCAA can’t go back and change the result of a game because their rules say they can’t. The Big 10 can’t use a clock other than the TV/stadium synced clock to determine the amount of time because their rules say they can’t. Yet one of these was allowed to happen 🤷‍♂️

What was Illinois coach Bret Bielema's reaction to Indiana football winning a national title? "That is single handedly the most impressive story that I've witnessed in my college career." His whole answer is worth your time:
