Romania has been named the first-ever Country of Focus at the 2026 American Film Market (AFM). ‘FJORD’, as the country’s official Oscar submission, will be part of the spotlight, with director Cristian Mungiu attending on November 14 to discuss Romanian cinema’s international reach and the film’s awards season campaign and release through NEON. hollywoodreporter.com/movies…

Cristian Mungiu says Sebastian Stan’s scene with the children and sheep required the most takes in ‘FJORD’: “If you have the opportunity of freezing the shot at the end of this scene to see how the sheep is looking at Sebastian. I think he established a relationship during these 40 takes. She’s a little bit like this and she’s touching his hand. I think she feels for him, that they were very erratic and very difficult to work with.” (via @NextBestPicture)

Variety predicts Sebastian Stan to receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama for his performance in ‘FJORD’. 🔗: variety.com/lists/2027-golde…

Cristian Mungiu explains how he knew Sebastian Stan could deliver what he needed for ‘FJORD’: “It’s wonderful when you can extract actors from being typecast, because that is the greatest danger. Sebastian was a very good superhero, but he is such a complex actor. You can see while talking to him and working with him, that he can do very different things. He left Romania when he was quite young — at eight — but he still remembers kindergarten, when it was perfectly normal to hold out your palm to a teacher who had a stick. That was simply how things were then. It’s more complicated to explain that to somebody who doesn’t have that experience. […] It was important for me to work with somebody who could understand the character’s background and who was very good at expressing the nuances I asked for.” (via @GoldDerby)

Romania’s Ministry of Culture is investing €100,000 in FJORD’s Oscar campaign. “Cristian Mungiu could make the most fabulous film on the face of the Earth, but he still has an election campaign of sorts to carry out. He has to convince the Academy’s 12,000 members to vote for him. They must have access to his film, which needs to be distributed everywhere, alongside television appearances. It’s a Sisyphean task, an extremely difficult undertaking. I don’t know if we will succeed, but we will try.” says Culture Minister Ioana Ciocan. 🔗: romania-insider.com/life/rom…
