The increasing automation of AI R&D is one of the most important things to track.
Regardless of your current view on AGI and potential risks. Sadly, we lack good ways of doing this so I'm pleased to see this research by @pzeroresearch. They find that AI's research taste has doubled ~3 months since December 2025.
How fast is AI's research taste improving?
We find that the experimental research taste of frontier models has doubled every ~3 months since December 2025. The best model, Opus 5.5, now exceeds our expert human baseline. Our human experts are experienced researchers, but most haven’t worked at a frontier lab.
Why measure research taste? In the AI Futures Model, it largely determines how quickly artificial superintelligence is reached once coding is fully automated.

SPEAKER JOHNSON: "Here's the challenge: We have to put some guardrails, some safety measures in place to ensure that AI doesn't run away, you know, that we don't have an out-of-control AGI, artificial general intelligence. But at the same time, we've got to make sure that we don't lose our edge in the global competition on this with China, because that would be a national security threat. And so we've got to balance that appropriately.
Now look, I've talked to all the providers of AI. I mean, Amodei, and Altman, and Elon, and everyone, all of them. And they all say that we need some guardrails, but they all have very different ideas on what that looks like. So they don't themselves even have the answer as of today. So we can't rush in and have Congress do something that would be detrimental to national security.
We're going to balance this. We're going to have steady hands at the wheel, as we do on every issue. And I believe we need to summon the platform providers all to one big meeting and work this out together in the same room. They're also competitors of one another, right? So they also have a corporate responsibility to be safe in the product that they are producing. And all of this has to come together in a way that can't be haphazard or rushed.
... I think the first step is to have a meeting of all the platform providers. I've talked to the president about this and others. I believe that's the next step, I think we need to do it quickly, and each of them—even those gentlemen that I've named—they all agree that that would be an efficacious thing. And so we're going to pull everybody together and make sure we do this in the right way. But it is a top priority for me and for the Congress."
Congress has been studying the AI issue since I set up a bipartisan task force to do so soon after I was elected Speaker. We all have a sense of urgency to create guardrails around the technology.
The key is designing the guardrails carefully, in a way that prevents any harm from AI —while also preserving American innovation and our national security by keeping our edge over China and other international competitors.
I am calling for a meeting in Washington with AI platform providers and key experts to determine the right course forward and discuss the responsibility providers have to ensure the safety of their products.

Some news: This week I am starting at @GoogleDeepMind as Director of AGI Economics on @shanelegg’s team. I will be joining the other amazing cross-disciplinary scientists researching AGI there.
My team will study how frontier AI could reshape the economy: what happens to work and labor, how wealth and power are distributed, how institutions adapt, how AI agents shape markets, and what kinds of models can help us reason clearly about futures that may look very different from the past. I’m incredibly excited to help build this research agenda.
If AGI changes how society operates, economics is going to be critical for shaping our shared future. Many more announcements soon.

AI will be a wrecking ball on society, and it’ll also empower the most agentic people to do amazing things.
Know someone who wants to make this go well?

Prediction: In the AI age, taste will become even more important. When anyone can make anything, the big differentiator is what you choose to make.

One of the most interesting parts of my convo w/ @demishassabis: He would support a “pause” on AI if he knew all companies + countries would do it — so society and regulation could catch up

This whole thing is so incredibly depressing. It's easy to kind of meme yourself into some sense of normalcy but it's obviously just not the case

Do you want to fund AI alignment research?
The AISI Alignment Team and I have reviewed >800 Alignment Project Applications from 42 countries, and we have ~100 that are very promising. Unfortunately, this means we have a £13-17M funding gap! Thread with details!🧵

This post is an experiment!
I want to fund & help accomplished people and nascent companies + nonprofits working to make AI safe, secure and good for humanity.
If you're doing that, or know somebody super credible who is, ping me.
And if you're a fan of @HalcyonFutures' work, please signal boost this with a re-post.
